The Oldies: SCARFACE (1932)

It’s time for another look at an oldies movie. This week I’ll talk about SCARFACE, no not the Al Pacino/Brian De Palma one, the original 1932 one.
I bet you didn’t even know it existed did you? Well, it’s never too late to discover new things.

Paul Muni - Scarface
Scarface was a classic gangster film of 1930′s (in addition to other films like The Public Enemy and Little Caesar) directed by Howard Hawks and starring Paul Muni as Tony Camonte (or as we better know him Tony Montana).
The basic story is the pretty much the same as the 1983 version (apart from the Cuban background), and yes even the ambiguous relationship between Tony and his sister.
The cast of Scarface also includes Ann Dvorak, Karen Morley, Osgood Perkins, C. Henry Gordon, George Raft, Boris Karloff.
I actually saw this original version of Scarface before seeing the 1983 version, and on some levels enjoyed this version better.
If you are a fan of Scarface or films in general, you will definitely want to check out the 1932 Scarface. Turns out it is still a pretty fun watch even today, and it’s interesting to see how close to the 1983 version it is.
So if you get a chance to check out Scarface, make sure to let me know what you think.
