He is the most overrated director ever, he has one huge hit and people love him, only flops since, this movie will most likely suck too.

  2. dragonmum says:

ummm… I hate to tell you this, but this is old news. There’s been a huge letter-writing campaign (NOT email, we want to actually get the producers’ attention) to recast the major players. This news has seriously offended every Avatar fan I’ve talked to.

  3. Sandie says:

Craig – I’m sorry to tell you, but I’m one of those people who love M. Night Shyamalan. Sure not all of his movies are great, but I like his style and he always gets great performances out of his actors. Hopefully, I’ll actually enjoy “The Last Airbender.” Fingers crossed.

dragonmum – I know this news has been out for a while, but not everyone knows about it. Also the casting of Jessica Jade Andres and Dev Patel is pretty recent, so I thought some people might like to know. 🙂

  4. Yuriy says:

Personally I do not care about the cast as long as they can capture the spirit of the characters they portray. Jessie probably wouldn’t have been able to capture Zuko that well in my opinion. He doesn’t seem like an evil sort.

  5. Yuriy says:

sorry for the double post. I forgot to mention that kitara and zuko characters look too pale to play them.

  6. makeup says:

I’ve have also been waiting to see who will be cast for the movie. We are a diverse family Asian, Black, White and respect the diversity of the characters that my family relates to. Unfortunately, the only way I see the characters picked for Katara and Sokka to resemble the series characters is to bronze their skin with make up. This was done in, the human stain and more recently in 1000 BC. Skin bronzing for movies is a cop out , in my opinion, when there are plenty of actors with beautiful brown skin (and blue eyes) to play parts.

    • Jenni says:

Amen Lmao! My whole entire family is a mix of every single culture. I have Asian cousins, Black cousins, white cousins, middle eastern cousins, African cousins, etc. I have family on every continent , so this casting is in many ways kind of ridiculous. I just think that they want to have it seem just like in Dragon Ball Evolution that they white guy characters can only be the hero ultimately. they do it a lot in America down playing the other races as the hero.

  7. Bethface says:

I know this is an older blog but I just found out that they are making a movie for Avatar. I am always fearful when they take a favorite book/show/cartoon/comic and turn it into a movie. For me it is more about the spirit of the show rather then the look. They will never be able to find someone who fits the characters looks exactly, I just hope who they chose can actually act. I have my fingers crossed that it will be good.

  8. Sky says:

My ONLY gripe is the fact that’s he’s casting Dev Patel as Zuko… when he is the spitting image of Soka…

I forsee doom coming from this…

  9. Rasheed says:

WTF!? Why are white people playing sokka and Katara in the movie? Dude their not caucasian the water tribe culture is based on the Inuit tribes of the north Pole! AKA NATIVE AMERICANS! they would have been better off casting Polynesians like the Hawaiians or latinos like the Puerto Ricans for those two roles!

  10. jjd says:

    CHANGEE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Sokka? (I wish) Trevor says:

I think I would make a more convincing Sokka than Jackson Rathbone, honestly. I’m funny, and I’m Black, White, and Native American, so my skin tone is (almost) the same. The only thing is I’m tall and have green eyes, haha. I really do wish he had cast based on race, or at least TRIED to get the characters to look right. There’s plenty of actors and actresses out there who could play these parts, and play them well, AND look like the characters at the same time.

Haha, I only get darker, too, since summer just hit. Plus, Sokka loves meat food, and I love fried chicken, which is meat, I’m Sokka’s real life counterpart, haha!

    • AVATARgirl says:

HAHAHAHA!!! You do look like Sokka! If others dont agree, atleast you look funny and would make an awesome Sokka!!

Damn… whatever happened to successful casting?!
I would really really reaaaally appreciate a recast.

  12. Zleet says:

The girl cast to play Katara looks very young.

Isn’t she supposed to be around sixteen or maybe seventeen in the cartoon?

  13. Sara says:

Dude, you spelled Aang wrong =|. Not cool. As a reporter you need to look into such things, especially something with such a strongly oppinionated and harsh fan base *giggle*.
    Nice post though ^^.

  14. Harbour says:

I am really quite pleased with the casting so far. Some of the choices I find rather funny (I can’t quite picture “Jasper” from Twilight playing sarcastic, googy Sokka), but I can see the potential resemblance to the cartoon, and I have a good feeling about this. From what I can see in the teaser trailer http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-trailer-the-last/51238, the effects and conversion of cartoon-to-reality seem quite well done.

  15. Sandie says:

You are right. It’s fixed, thanks for pointing it out 🙂

  16. Mark says:

The cast has all good actors but they aren’t the same colors when it comes to skin color. Maybe make up crew could temporarilly change that. Other than that Ive seen the trailer for the movie and it looks good. I love the avatar cartoon so this movie will be good. Peace out people!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Allison says:

Seriously, they HAVE to recast Sokka and Katara. I like the person they cast for Suki. I’m just going on her looks, though. And for Aang…I saw a trailer for it and they HAVE to make the tattoo darker. You can just barley tell that it’s there. And the person for Zuko…Zuko actually IS Caucasion, and they cast him as an Indian person (I’m not being racist. Some of my best friends are Indian). I wonder how they’ll do Appa and Momo and Roku’s dragon and all the funky creatures on the show. They had better not mess this up!

    • Jenni says:

yah it is kind of racist because they made all of the bad guys darker than they were in the show and middle eastern. then they made all of the good guys white when they weren’t. an there is no asian people except aang so far that i have seen in the trailer. So It is pretty much racist. Everything is portrayed differently. they aren’t even going to have Togh in the movie. It is probably going to be bad since they pretty much changed the basic facts of the story.

    • AlmostLiterally says:

Jenni – Toph isn’t in the movie because this is the FIRST movie in a trilogy. Each movie will be one season. And from as far as I can tell, it is following the story very loyally. I don’t see what basic facts they are changing.

The point you mentioned is the thing that bugs me most about the casting. The fact that most of the Asian or dark-skinned actors are Fire Nation. Personally, I think it would be more along the lines of this: Air Nomads: Asian. Water Tribe: Inuit. Earth Kingdom: Asian, Caucasian, and African American. Fire Nation: Asian and Caucasian. As for which Asian nationalities, I’m not positive. All the bending styles are Chinese, I believe. The Fire Nation has some similarities to Japan.

And yes. The tattoo and scar need to be darker.

  18. Lily says:

OMG!!!!!! I’m sooooooo excited. i am a die hard avatar fan!!! I think the casting is pretty good except Zuko!!!! 🙁 He’s supposed to be like buff and super hot not some indian dude no offense Dev. your a great actor but…no way im gonna cry…

  19. Chris says:

Gonna judge just on looks, since I’m no expert on actor skill, but they should find new actors for Katara, Sokka, and Zuko… The first two, too light of a skin tone, and Zuko, too dark! Aang is looking alright, and Suki? Well… I guess she does look a bit older than the others in the cartoon, and that face paint shouldn’t be very hard at all to slap on!

  20. worriedfan says:

all i have to say, is that i am sooo worried to see this movie with this cast.

i LOVED Twilight, but as soon as i saw the movie, I’ve hated Twilight ever since.

i hope this movie will not do the same.

Avatar is my all time favorite show and i’m glad there will be new episodes.
i just hope i wont be seeing the actors faces instead of the cartoons.

i also think Jessey McCartney would have been better for Zuko, and some darker skinned actors for Katara and Sokka.

who know, maybe M. Night Shyamalan will make it all work out.

*crosses fingers and watches whole series over*

  21. Allison says:

Wait, there’re going to be new episodes?!?!?!

    • Jenni says:

Yeah is there going to be because at the end of season four, Zuko asked ” where is my mother? or What happened to my mother?”

  22. Liily says:

OMG jackson TOTALLY has that cute little goofy grin down!!!!!!!! He’ll be PERFECT for this role 🙂

  23. Jess says:

Who cares what the characters look like. Like many people said as long as they capture the character’s personalities from the show then I’m sure the movie will turn out fine. Btw I happen to be a M. Night Shyamalan fan. I love all of his movies and I couldn’t be happier to hear that he is filming this movie. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

  24. Antoinette says:

First of all, M. Night Shamaylan is big fat PHONY!!!!

    Ya got that? PHONY!

Second of all, he didn’t even know what Avatar was until his 7 year old kid made him watch the show. Since then he was “hooked”. Has anyone noticed that with all of these petitions and protests that he still hasn’t said ANYTHING about the cast? Sure…the casting directors are responsible but MNS is as well to a degree. The actors have to protray the characters’ essenses yes. But the people are not going to be able to focus on the movie if they’re too focused on “Why don’t they look like the character?”

It’s like if Harry Potter’s character role was given to an African-British person with very dark skin. “Oh let’s just give him green contacts!”

    (-__-)* Really?

I’m not seeing this movie. Shaymalan wouldn’t know a good movie even in it crawled up his ass and ate his prostate gland with his kidneys for dessert.

    • Jessi says:

Some people just shouldn’t write on sites like this. I think after some movie makeup magic everything will be all good. Stop you bitchen.

  25. shpotz says:

very disappointed in katara and sokka.
now this is where it gets hurtful. alot of people might be offended by what im about to say, what you must remember is, i really dont care.
i dont mean to offend BUT… well here i go.
aang- should be an asian kid. lets face it. hes a monk! now if your white and a monk im sorry but you just arent cut out to throw sledgehammers of wind around, thats not us, im so sorry. aang not being an asian kid is very hurtful, but after that he is slightly chubby! why oh why would you do this to me! o it burns my corneas to see this abomination!
but atleast this particular white slightly chubby (I KNOW ITS JUST BABY FAT!) white boy can do karate.
Katara- o why! she looks like shes 10! we need an older actress! possibly a beautiful eskimo? that what i always imagined them as. not white people! i always thought of maybe the earth kingdom as where the white guys would be, not the entire nation of course but maybe we could be a minority? that’d be fun!
anyway, we need katara to be a bit older, and not white.
Sokka!- this is the funny guy. never really heard of this guy before but if he was in twilight i already hate him with a burning hatred of ten thousand suns! once again, needs to be eskimo. in truth he doesnt even need to be eskimo! just do what the did with the evil king guy in 300 and find some hispanic people that kinda fit the bill as eskimos.

Suki- you know what? screw it, she seems hot enough i got nothing to complain about when it comes to her.
thank goodness for my inability to have a back bone in the presence of a beautiful female. I am a sheep.

  26. Kitty says:

I can’t believe this! I’m black and I love Avatar, so for the director to not cast just a LITTLE BIT on the characters’ races is outrageous! I mean come on! This is just not right! Plus the guy who plays Zuko is way too dark!!!!! He needs to be of ASIAN DECENT!!! My god! I was looking forward to this movie!!!

  27. Stephen says:

the chick playing katara is freaking hot i must say…. so what if shes white….

  28. julee says:

Jackson Rathbone is not just Twilight. I have seen him in other things and he’s awesome. I’m actually looking forward to him. Katara and Sokka have blue eyes, which implies at least partial caucasian-ism, but many of the other characters are clearly Asian, and should have been cast that way.

As for boycotting the film because of the actor’s race, or whose cast–wow, what a waste. If you love the show so much, at least give the movie a chance. You can decide to hate it after seeing it!!

  29. Jess says:

Thank You Julie! She just about summed it all up!

  30. Anne says:

sorry guys, but you are al complaining that zuko should be played by someone of Asian decent. last time i checked India lies in Asia.
But i do agree that a person of Chinese, Japanese or Korean decent should have been better if you want to cast close to the look of the character.
Fire nation style seems to be mostly Chinese anyway.
Sokka’s casting seems okay, even though his skin colour is to light, but that shouldn’t be such a big deal. Katara does look very young on the pictures though.
While i think it is a bloody shame that the characters don’t look exactly like their counterparts in the anime, i am waiting with my final judgement untill after the movie. i have seen the teaser trailers and they look good.

for me it al depends on how the actors portray the characters in the movie.
face it, the actors could be twins with their anime counterpart for all i care, but if they don’t act the part as wel, it’s a flop anyway.
not to mention the actors have to be willing to play the part.

(sorry for any bad spelling and/or grammar, english is not my first language =P)

  31. Kiki says:

This is an outrage who ever picked this cast must be blind! I a big fan of Avatar and these actors and actess are just… never mind

  32. Hina says:

Omg the cast SUCKS!! If they had gotten some hot asian guy for suko and spray painted katara and and soka it wouldve worked out ok! But i guess as long as they can ACT the part the movie wnt b a total waste…but if they make another movie they better not fuck up with toph!!!

  33. Stephanie says:

I am a huge avatar fan. there are alot of people who are disapointed in the cast of the avatar, and feel like they didnt “respect their proper ethicities”. One, water tribe people look like native americans. In the cartoon the characters didnt really look aisan anyways. (which im sure a lot of people were expecting) Two. make-up goes A LONG WAY. lots of make-up, body spray can make a person look TOTALLY different. All im picky is that they get the characters perfect!

  34. one says:

Why is the main character white???

    Shouldn’t he be Asian?

What the f**k this cat M. Night Shyamalan doesn’t appear to want minorities in the main roles

I mean he clearly had the opportunity to provide one Asian person the main role.

Why?? did M. Night Shyamalan choose to use mainly white actros??

    M. Night Shyamalan clearly has the pull to choose his own actors, I don’t understand

  35. Brittany says:

They should have picked people who look like them… =/ I hope they dont mess up Azula! I love her! XD

  36. jazzy says:

weo people i just got to say that i think you all are just complainin bout how these characters are. but in truth how many people do you know that went to go and auditioned for the parts your not5 agreeing too. give them credit. maybe you’ll be surprised of to wat you might find.

    • khookie says:

Yeah, give them a shot la! I just pray Mr. M. Night doesn’t do one of his famous dumbass cameos! Ala Lady In The Water. Bloody ego, at that point I knew the movie tanked big time!

Wait…. I take it back, I hope he does make an appearance as Momo. That would be epic coz he just has to glutonize fruits and STFU!

  37. Crazedbastard says:

White actors in a dominantly Asian film hah? This is definately DBE all over again. You thought the insignificance of movies casting people not of a race were over as in black and white films, those days sure as hell ain’t over! Hollywood’s philosophy of a fantasy is that it doesn’t have to be race specific, M. Night Shamalyn who has never directed a frickin’ action or fantasy film in his frickin’ life not even an asian film has the mind of an old industrial media wench is making a film like this?!?!?! They should have chosen Quentin Tarantino to direct this movie, HELLO he directed Crouching Tiger Frickin’ Hidden Dragon! Why choose some inexperienced director with an equally inexperienced cast? BUTCHERY and FLOP combined! This is like what they did with Harry Potter 3 or The Mario Brothers, pure flop! So Jackson Rathborne of twilight GLAMPIRE fame which is a movie based on a major women’s fantasy meets a sappy soap opera is acting as a guy with comic relief? Sounds like George Lucas giving us Jar Jar Binks, BIG MISTAKE! The only difference between this upcoming movie and Dragon Ball Evolution is that the director and actors at least had some experience. Rotten Tomatoes as well as Roger and Ebert will definately go all out Cowell on this movie!

This obviously was the introvenious and evil little work of some Green back Yuppies who saw a cash cow in this film. Yeah mainstream let’s ‘milk that mooovie’, ah the butchery and money brained bastards never cease!

  38. B says:

I personally have not seen all seasons of Avatar, regretably. What i did see of it that it was an well done story. M. night, i think, is very hyped up. In my opinion many of his movies fall short and leave something to be desired. I, myself, walked out of the movie theater before ” The Village ” ended. Luckily this movie has been co written with the creators of Avatar so this may be the saving grace for Avatar. Of course its going to be a group effort when it is not M. Nights creation and someone elses. So far i must say with what i have seen from the final trailers released in the United States and Japan. Personally i think if has been done right it will be a fantastic movie. Even if some of the cast arent up to the peoples standards. Let us hope.

  39. AlmostLiterally says:

The casting does bug me a bit. I don’t get the girl they cast for Suki…she looks NOTHING like her.

As for Jackson Rathbone…from the interviews I’ve seen him in, he’s a pretty naturally funny guy. He’s the only choice I’m actually happy with, because I’m pretty sure he can pull it off. He also was already a fan of Avatar. Dunno which other actors were too.

See, the ethnicity of the actor wouldn’t bug me AS MUCH if I thought the actor was a good choice for the character. Jackson is a good choice as far as I’m concerned, I don’t know too much about Nikola Peltz or Noah Ringer though. This might sound weird, but I wished that some of the voice actors would play their characters. I mean, Zach Tyler Eisen looks more like Aang than Noah Ringer. Would have to shave that great hair of his though :(. Dante Basco and Mae Whitman could work, though they might be getting up there in age. Jessie Flower…erg…I’d want to say yes, but I’m afraid she’s a bit tall. The only ones I can’t see would be Greg Baldwin for Iroh and Mark Hamill for Ozai…*blink*

  40. I’m a twilight fan, who has seen every episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender(its my favorite tv show of all time!) and is on Team Jasper, I think Jackson Rathbone being casted as Sokka is bullshit. I do think he would make a good one, but I think it would piss every Jasper/Alice fan who will see this movie because Sokka will have some lip action on screen unlike Jasper. Ya, I can already tell, even though I love this show/movie, I won’t be liking any parts where Jackson Rathbone(who every time I look at him, my mind automatically thinks of Jasper Whitlock) will be with anyone of the female Gender(besides Nicola of course) who is not Ashley Greene in a romantic way. Gr. =D But besides that, I like the cast. Even if Jesse McCartney won’t be playing Zoko. Yes the skin color is a problem, but oh well. Nothing we can do about it.

  41. jane doe says:

I think there shouldn’t have been so many Indians in the film. All of the characters should have been Chinese, Korean, Inuit, or Japanese. The only Indian that should have been in the film is Guru Pathik. There shouldnt have been so many Indians in the movie. And obviously the director thought it was okay to cast soooo many Indians as long as there were a few white people in it. It pisses me off. The movie is not Indian inspired at all. I see chinese, Japanese, Korean and Inuit influences not Indian.

    • Doug says:

I was a bit apprehensive at first with the cast, but I just saw the movie today and I only have one thing to say… FAN-FRIGGIN’-TASTIC!
So the principle cast aren’t played by people of Asian decent…you get over that fact almost from the very beginning. Each one of these very talented actors and actress played their parts beautifully. The movie had the same feel, flow, and pace as the show does. Including Sokka’s one-liners and overall sense of humor. What amazes me, is Mr. Night actually stayed extremely close to the original storyline/script. Were there differences? Yes, movies are always going to differ in some way from the original source material. But the differences (aside from the stupid race thing that’s been beaten like a dead horse…get a life folks, honestly) were minor and matters of slight artistic license. Like costume design…etc. And it’s those changes that make the difference, because usually they are in place to add a bit of realism to the movie. So, if you thought the cartoon was impressive…go see it on the big screen!

P.S. – I’m NOT a huge fan of M. Night Shyamalan’s work…with the exception of this movie. I will totally be getting this on DVD. 😀

  42. Jonny says:

I am sorry… anyone who thinks highly of this crap shit of a movie is a fucking moron or 11 years old mentally.

  43. Klawsette says:

I thought they did a pretty good job with casting. The girl playing Katara could pull it off fine with a simple spray-tan XD

  44. Rockport268 says:

I just saw the movie yesterday. First of all, they pronounced everything wrong. Second, it all seemed rushed. There was no tome for character development at all. Also, the actor playing Iroh was totally wrong. Iroh did not have an accent, his hair was shorter and neat, and he was fat. And I still wish the actor playing Zuko was white, had the ponytail, and his scar showed up better. And Suki wasn’t on it at all. I wish they had split up the seasons into two parts each.

  45. salma says:

really think that Jackson Rathbone may not make us laugh as he does cartoon soka, but it’s something we will check in at launch, and hopefully if because it is part of this series…

  46. Omg..i wonder how the cast got in..because they should be doing part two..too..

  47. The actual genders and races of what the elements represent are in Rodney St.Michael’s book, Sync My World: Thief’s Honor GA SK. (myconnected.webs.com)

Air = Yellow “race” = Males = Scholars.

Water = Small Browns = Females = Shamans.

Earth = Blacks = Lesbian = Social Ubuntu Business Class.

Fire = Whites = Gays = Military, Militant Business Class.

Ether or Metal = Big Browns = Bisexuals = Working Class, Bi-military
(females & bis go together like Katara & Sokka or brown females and males).

    Therefore Aang should be Chinese.

Katara should be a Malay like a Filipina.

The Earth Kingdom should be African.

Zuko should be White like Hitler, Alexander the Gay or Gen. Arthur McArthur.

The Fire Nation’s army should be like the fiery Sacred Band of Thebes (an ancient elite gay army that Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell troops would be envious of) or the Sturmabteilung, the much-feared homosexual stormtroopers of Hitler.

And the Slumdog Millionaire (casted as Zuko) should be Sokka.

This film is just as messed up as the movie Angels and Demons. The branding of the priests were incorrect.

But anyway, from the guy who gave you the Sixth Sense, which did not portray childhood schizophrenia accurately or anywhere near the real world, what do you expect?

Bisexuals love horror and terror. They also scam people, just like the Wizard of Oz. The old Oz film which is also about the Elements is understandably all-white because they were ignorant back then. People have higher standards now, and realism is a must.

But M.Night, the Wizard of South Asia also has lessons for everyone after conning them:

    1) Clearly, when people don’t play roles that fit them, everything is messed up. (e.g. “male” clergy in what should be a female realm, forbidding gays in the military which is their territory)

    2) Whites are not fit to play the leading roles of Air and Water in the world scene. Leave that to the ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, Korea and South East Asia).

    3) Arabs are not necessarily the greatest evil in the world. Occasionally, they float like Ether to the ranks of Water. It is fiery whites that fit the role of Lucifer or Satan.

    4) By acquiring objective reviews from leading critics, they have agreed themselves that these are all factual objective realities.

Thus, the Wizard, even if he is a con man, is also an accidental pseudo teacher. Partly, it’s called sunyata or “emptiness.”

  48. Kamui says:

I actually really enjoyed the movie. Yes, I have seen the entire animated series. Yes, the ethnicities are off. Yes, his cast choices were definitely different. But in all honesty, it actually sells.

All those people who went in expecting it to be just like the animation were deluded. Yes there are things that could and should have been done better, but this movie was amazing in its own way. Its hard to turn a t.v series of anything into a movie because there is so much happening along the seasons period that you just can’t fit it all into a reasonably timed movie.

    M. Night put in what he needed, and I think that the people he casted really did it justice. And for all those who think the personalities were off..? If Aang was a bubbly little boy, the movie would not have been as good. It would have seemed childish. If M. Night spent the whole film having Aang care only about games and have such careless ways the movie would have been boring. It would have just been another movie aimed at kids. THIS was aimed for everyone. If you want childish, then go back to watching the animation.

People should really think about what it takes to be in the position to turn something with such a high fan base into a movie. The pressure is HUGE. Take the Twilight Saga for example. The books were amazing, and then they got turned into movies… Same with Harry Potter. Such excellent reads, yet some of the movies are a waste of time.

Of course, this is all just my opinion. Everyone is different. If you think I’m wrong than thats fine. Flame me if you wish but it’s just freedom of speech. Just remember, if you can comment about hating all this, then I can certainly comment about loving it.

    Peace out

  49. Kittymariecat says:

i think he should make his own avatar so people cant judge on how its so diffrent. well he should wait for the legend of korra to be done. then the new avatar should take place in 2000 or somewhere close to that. wat do u all think about that instead of the last airbender

  50. Emily01suen says:

The movie is terrible!!! Aang never smiles, Sokka doesn’t laugh once, and Katara’s hair is different! Aang’s name is said as ung and all the costumes are different! In the cartoons, the concept for bending is you have complete control over your element, and if you want to pick something up by bending, you do it in one movement, not in 100! Aang’s tattoo isn’t even blue! The cartoons arw
