I think it a bit unfair that you bagged out all the other castings as “they were not of the same ethnicity” as characters in the cartoon yet Dev Patel is clearly not even slightly as pale as Zuko.
I am a fan of Avatar and I am quite pleased with the actors/actresses chosen even if they do not EXACTLY resemble the MADE-UP, DRAWN characters.

    Hi Rhiannon,

I do see your point, but I think my excitement for this casting news came from the fact that Jesse McCartney wouldn’t be playing Zuko, and also that Dev Patel is a really great actor.

    • “I am exited for the movie”! It looks great and they had the Northern water tribe and the animals right, just like the other things. But this dude”Dev”, his name is it. He doesn’t fit the part of Zuko. His voice, his look; none of it goes with the character. I think that who ever is going to direct the second and other movies need to look back into the cartoon. Nichola Peltx’, and the others they seem to fit the characters {although white and the characters arent.} But in the next fiew{since it’s a movie and they want to make it like the chartoon it’s gonna be more than four movies.} They need a change of person.

    Okay FIRST:

Whoever wrote this article might want to look more into the show because they keep spelling Aang’s name wrong.

The ethnicities are all wrong. Why are the water-tribe people pale when the they are orianally tan?

They shoiuld switch the actors playing Sokka and Zuko. D:<

(Im on a broken laptop so my spelling here is not that great. D:)

  4. Sandie says:

@random – I did spell it wrong, thanks for pointing out. It’s fixed now 🙂

ew! zuko was supposed to be played by someone more attractive and broken! this guy is too upbeat and indian to play this role…i am not happy at all with this choice in character! i hope they change their minds!

  6. worriedfan says:

i also think Dev would be better for Sokka.

    and someone Caucasian for Zuko.

lets hope they add that scar, since i did see a picture of Dev in costume…he had no scar there.

    soo, let’s pray,

*grabs the person above me’s hand*

i love Avatar though, it’s my favorite show and it’s been with me through a lot.

i hope they don’t mess this up.

I am very pleased at the casting of Dev Patel for the character of Zuko. In Slumdog Millionaire, he proved that he is a talented actor capable of playing a passionate role. With his acting skills he should be able to make the transition from villain, to conflicted youth, and finally to charismatic hero.

About the controversy around Dev’s ethnicity… is it really an issue? In most animes, the ethnicity of characters is rarely definite and is usually irrelevant. Unless the series takes place in a specific setting, or race is especially important to the plot, it is unclear.

I think one of the reasons Avatar fans have such a problem with Dev’s casting is that they have an idealized perception of Zuko’s character. Fan (girls) imagine Zuko as being something like a Knight in Shining Armor, and Dev is… somewhat goofy-looking. Point is, castings of fictional characters often clash with the images preconceived by fans. I suppose it will be like the casting of Robert Pattinson in Twilight; once we’re used to it, we’ll wonder why we were so upset initially.

That said, now I’m really interested in who will be playing Azula in the sequel! <3

i think that the casting needs to be re done or people will have doubts about the movie.I also think Zuko should be played by some sort of the “hot bad boy type”.Dev looks to good and he looks, well, not smokin hott like zuko should be.and dev is too dark(not bein racist).I dont think that dev will play a good zuko, but who knos?maybe he will.

Now about jackson,He should play zuko instead of dev.and dev should be sokka.and personaly,i like jackson as himself and jasper(in twilight),but not as sokka. If he was darker he would have a better chance to be respected as sokka.I loved the twilight saga but the movie was kind of a let down.and i really hope that it will be different for avatar cuz its my favorite cartoon show.Lets just pray that they do something about the cast!!

  9. Gabe Taijeron says:

Ethinicities will not be entirely respected because in the cartoon, the cartoons did not always reflect the “Asian-ness” of the regions here in the real world. In fact, I am hard pressed to find “African/Black” characters anywhere in the series. I am not saying they aren’t there, but just very well concealed. The entire cast in the cartoons were not always “Asian-like”, such as the 3rd-eye’d fire bender, or some of the Air Nomad monks (some looked Caucasian) and finally, not all of the voice actors were Asian, either. Let’s not get too wrapped around the axle about the ethnicity. I won’t. This was supposed to be anime, with international appeal. The cartoon, the story line, and the martial arts appeal to us all with much beauty, elegance and power. I’m gonna go see the movie, and bring my kids to it.

  10. Thouthou says:

    Yerk…he is horrible ………Why???
    I love Zuko me!!!

  11. Pliz says:

The casting for the show is alright, and some of you are right. They should of switched the casting of Zuko and Sokka. Possibly casted someone else for Katara. Seeing that they’re more winter type of people, but you never know. I mean it can turn out to be a good movie. If it doesn’t do well, well it would turn out like another dragonball. IF you dont like the movie make your own. See how hard it is, and how long it takes to put together the perfect cast, and movie.

And I am a fan of the show. I watched the whole thing, I hope someone does this movie justice one point in time.

  12. MJC says:

I think that he looks kinda like the part, but I would have liked it better if it was Jessie, he is so much cuter, but again this guy might cut it…

  13. vikki says:

i seriously do not like the cast choice for Zuko. dude, he’s like the hottest character and they cast patel? sorry, but no that’s just not right. i would not want jesse mccartney to play zuko at all cuz that’s just wrong as well. but zuko is my favorite character and this news is kinda depresseing. 🙁

  14. Alex says:

Eww… I think Jesse would have been WAY soooo better
.., ., plus Zuko is supose to be HOT…
No offence to the dude who play him in The Last Airbender movie
., But Yeah… They would have been better off with Jesse McCartney… 🙁

  15. sunny says:

i liked this change, because you know, dev doesn’t look a lot like zuko, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than JESSE MCCARTNEY ! i’m an avatar fan, i think (and hope) the movie is gonna be great. i like the cast, too.
avatar is my childhood i grew up watching this cartoon i can’t wait for the movie !!

  16. tony says:

zuko should be a really HOT and sooo much YOUNGER asian guy !!
not patel, but CERTAINLY not jesse (that’s the worse).
soo, yeha, i’m not satisfied, but i’m kinda okay with it.
i love the cartoon, i think the movie is gonna rock 😉

  17. Girl says:

Not at all! He doesn’t even look like the real one from the series.

  18. me says:

    yeha ZUKO IS 16 !!!! gosh !!
and he looks nothing like patel !
