BURIED – Sundance Movie Review

I originally wasn’t sure whether I would be able to go see BURIED, because it might have been too much for me (I mean it’s a guy in a coffin for 90 min). But after hearing so many good things about it, I decided to suck it up and go see it. Well, let me tell you, it was an amazing film, an effed up one, but amazing. I’m not even sure this is a film you like or dislike, it’s more of something you experience with every part of your body.

The premise is simple enough, Ryan Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, a truck driver working in Iraq who wakes up to realize that he has been buried alive. It’s then a race against the clock as he tries to get out using the cell phone that was left in there with him. Needless to say it’s intense and it will haunt you for quite some time after you see it.

The film would be nothing without the brilliant performance by Ryan Reynolds (awards talk anyone?). He goes through so many real and heartbreaking emotions throughout the film, I forgot I was watching a film and was completely immerses in the nightmare this guy was living.

Director Rodrigo Cortés does an amazing job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, with some incredible shots, such as a well-like shot of Paul laying in the coffin. Even though there is only one actor and one tight location, there is not one dull moment in Buried. Rodrigo Cortés keeps changing perspective and really creating this claustrophobic environment for the audience.

This is probably one of the most messed up films I have ever seen, but I can’t recommend it enough. If you like films and good acting, Buried provides an experience like nothing else and even though I probably couldn’t watch it again (once was enough to traumatize me for life), I am so glad that I got to experience this intense film.
