Who Knew a DRAGON Could KICK-ASS? (Updated
Update: Turns out Kick Ass still had some fight left in it as it came back to actually beat How To Train a Dragon with $19.8 million compared ‘Dragon’s’ $19.6 million. This contest has so many twist and turns -it’s like Bush v Gore all over again.
Dreamwork’s new animated feature HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON beat the recently released movie KICK-ASS in box office sales this weekend. Kick-Ass follows the exploits of a wanna be superhero. How To Train Your Dragon depicted the struggle of a young Viking trying to find his place in his village’s warrior culture.
How to Train Your Dragon netted $20 million dollars, while the live-action Kick Ass earned $19.75 million dollars. Lionsgate Entertainment expected a better showing with the popularity of superhero movies and the aggressive marketing campaign the film received. The weekend tickets for all movies were lower than expected. Ticket sales might rebound at the start of the summer season with such movies as Iron Man 2 and Twilight.
The fact that Kick-Ass was R-rated surely didn’t help its cause against the PG rated How To Train Your Dragon. Ultimately, the comparison was unfair as the demographics for both movies were fundamentally different as ‘Dragon’ was more likely to appeal to a much younger audience which tends to be more profitable for studios in general/
