Summit Entertainment has acquired the rights to the upcoming movie “The Impossible” which stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. “The Impossible” is based on a true story of events that took place during the Christmas Tsunami that struck Thailand in 2004.
According to THR, Summit has nabbed most of the worldwide rights to the film with the exception of distribution in Spain where Warner Brothers maintains the rights. The film will begin production in Spain in August before eventually moving to Thailand sometime in October.
In acquiring the rights to “The Impossible”, Summit now owns the rights to two upcoming films starring Naomi Watts after nabbing the rights to “Fair Game” last week. Summit will distribute “Fair Game” in North America and other territories. “Fair Game” will debut later this month at the Cannes Film Festival and sees Watts starring alongside Sean Penn as an outed undercover CIA operative.
