N.W.A Movie Gets A Writer
“World Trade Center” screenwriter Andrea Berloff will pen the script for an upcoming film documenting the rise and fall of seminal gangsta rap group N.W.A., according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The film, “Straight Outta Compton”, takes its name from the group’s 1988 debut album, which sold 9 million copies and helped bring gangsta rap to the mainstream while also setting off a firestorm of controversy for songs like “Fuck Tha Police”.
N.W.A. – Niggaz With Attitude – was comprised of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, MC Wren, and DJ Yella. Eazy died of AIDS in 1995 while Dre and Cube were busy transforming themselves into two of the most influential solo artists in hip hop history.
The group’s history is largely a tale of in-fighting and ego, as Cube left in 1990 over royalty disputes shortly before a conflict between Dre and Eazy E tore the group apart for good.
Ice Cube went on to become a successful actor and movie producer, and he’s set to produce “Straight Outta Compton”.
