PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (aka #4) To Be Shot in 3-D

Disney Studios will shoot “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in 3-D, according to MTV News. Add “Pirates” to the very long list of movies scheduled to be released in 3-D in the next year or two. All are attempting to ride on the coattails of the success of “Avatar”.
The big question is whether a movie will be filmed in 3-D (using 3-D cameras) or whether the movie will be filmed in 2-D and then converted into 3-D. In the case of “Pirates”, the movie will shoot in 3-D. Since the cameras are larger and a bit harder to handle, this choice isn’t easily made. Some directors prefer the convenience of filming in 2-D and then using conversion software to create a 3-D version. There is much discussion as to whether the movie looks better one way or the other.
Movies that have used the conversion method include “Alice in Wonderland” and the upcoming “The Green Hornet”. Movies being shot in 3-D include “The Tron Legacy” and “Drive Angry”.
