Don Cheadle Named UN Goodwill Ambassador

Don Cheadle

American actor Don Cheadle has been named a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations environment program. Cheadle was appointed on Saturday in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali.

The announcement of Cheadle as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program was announced by UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner who said that Cheadle would help raise green awareness around the globe. Cheadle vowed to fight climate change and promote environment conservation.

Cheadle is connected to Rwanda in a special way after starring in the emotional 2004 film “Hotel Rwanda” which told the story of the 1994 genocide that gripped the country. The film told the story of a hotel director who used his hotel to try and harbor the targets of the government’s genocide. During the course of the atrocities more than 500,000 people, mostly Tutsis and moderate Hutus, were murdered.
