Andrew Garfield is Your New Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Andrew Garfield will be the next Peter Parker in Sony’s upcoming reboot of the “Spider-Man” franchise. Sony has tapped Marc Webb to direct the new film from James Vanderbilt’s script. Garfield beat out six other young actors after screen tests were conducted earlier this month.
The new version of the “Spider-Man” franchise will go back to the web-crawler’s days in high school as he struggles to deal with the knowledge that his uncle died despite his ability to prevent it from happening. Sam Raimi directed the original three films which starred Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. The film will hit theaters in 3D on July 3, 2012.
Garfield, just 26, is the same age Maguire was when he was cast as the Marvel comic hero in 2001. He is a relative unknown in the U.S. though he recently starred in three “Red Riding” films released last year in the UK. Garfield is set to play a major role in the upcoming film about Facebook entitled “The Social Network,” which is also a Columbia project.
