Make It Rain, James Cameron!

Director James Cameron will bring in a record $350 million thanks to his box office smash “Avatar.” The windfall is said to the largest ever for a director from a single movie and was helped by the fact that Cameron wrote, directed, and produced the film for Twentieth Century Fox.
“Avatar” smashed box office records after its December 2009 release. The film brought in a record $2.7 billion worldwide and went on to bring in millions more through 2D DVD and BluRay releases. The structure of Cameron’s deal with the studio likely resulted in his massive financial windfall. Hollywood insiders suspect Cameron’s deal was probably a “first dollar gross” or “at cash break” deal, but neither side could have foreseen the financial records the film would set.
Fox and Cameron recently announced that a special edition “Avatar” will be released for a limited engagement beginning August 27th. The release will include 8 minutes of extra footage and can be seen exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D.
