Actor William Petersen has landed his first big screen role since departing the long running television series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Petersen joins Christina Hendricks and Lucy Liu as recent additions to the ensemble cast of the indie drama “Detachment.”

Tony Kaye, who directed “American History X,” will direct the film which is set in a high school. Petersen, Hendricks, and Liu join a cast that already includes Adrien Brody, Bryan Cranston, James Caan and Marcia Gay Harden. Brody stars in the film as a substitute teacher who uncharacteristically becomes involved with the teachers and students at the school he subs in at. Petersen will play the role of a history teacher who is a Vietnam vet. He finds himself in trouble after showing a gay film to his students in an attempt to teach them tolerance.

Petersen parted ways with “CSI” last year after playing Gil Grissom for a decade on the CBS crime thriller. He has been busy since his departure with roles in various theater productions. He has appeared in “The Endgame” and “A Dublin Carol” at Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago as well as “Blackbird” at Victory Gardens.
