BLUE VALENTINE Starring Ryan Gosling & Michelle Williams Given NC-17 Rating
BLUE VALENTINE, The Weinstein Company’s drama starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams has been given the NC-17 rating by the MPAA ratings board.
NC-17 ratings generally lead to a very limited release of the film; however the rating could be spun into a great promotional opportunity for Blue Valentine. It’s not clear why the film was granted the rating, and without passing the rating appeals process, TWC may be forced to re-edit and cut the film to earn their R rating.
Blue Valentine has been generating Oscar buzz for both Gosling and Williams which centers around the weakening relationship of the couple, and how they cope with the changes.
Personally, I’m not sure there really is a rhyme or reason to the rating process that the MPAA follows. It seems like films that exploit violence (think Hostel, Saw, etc.) generally receive a lower rating then films that even hint at a sexual theme. I’m a big fan of the franchises I mentioned, but I think the entire rating process needs to be looked at a little closer.
There have been no additional comments from the filmmaker, TWC, or the MPAA.
