Glee Creator Ryan Murphy May Helm THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
Ryan Murphy, the creator of the sing along TV show Glee, is looking to direct a reboot of the 1975 musical THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Glee just finished an episode that will air on October 26th dedicated to the cult classic. Fox 2000 is trying to sign Murphy for the Rocky Horror remake. Fox is heading the project with Peter Chernin and Loud Adler producing.
Murphy hasn’t committed to the film yet, but has met with Fox 2000. Aside from Glee, Murphy is looking to adapt the Larry Kramer play “The Normal Heart” into a film starring Mark Ruffalo; and has been paid $5 million to write and direct a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, who Murphy worked with during Eat, Pray, Love.
The Rocky Horror Picture show was released in 1975 and was written by Richard O’Brien (who also starred as Riff Raff in the film) and director Jim Sharman. Other cast included Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Susan Sarandon (Janet Weiss), Barry Bostwick (Brad Majors), Patricia Quinn (Magenta), Nell Campbell (Columbia) and Meat Loaf (Eddie). The film has grossed over $100 million dollars since it’s release and is considered the longest running theatrical release in film since it still fills theaters into midnight showings.
It’ll be interesting to see who is cast in these iconic roles and if Murphy can pull off a retelling of the classic story! I’m anxious for more information on this one.
