Leonardo DiCaprio & Tobey Maguire Taking On THE GREAT GATSBY?
Baz Luhrmann is planning an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerlad’s novel THE GREAT GATSBY, and it looks like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire have been working with the Moulin Rouge! director in New York.
DiCaprio and Maguire have been reading the roles of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway respectively. Rebecca Hall (The Town) has read for the role of Daisy Buchanan who, in the novel, is Gatsby’s lost love.
This will not be the first time that DiCaprio has worked with Luhrmann. He stared in William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet in 1996.
Luhrmann is working with Craig Pearce, who collaborated with the director on Moulin Rouge!, to write the script for Gatbsy. Luhrmann is also producing with Catherine Martin and Red Wagon’s Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick. Sony and Luhrmann share the rights to the project.
It wasn’t confirmed if Luhrmann’s next project was going to be the direction of the Gatsby adaptation or an original musical that he’d been working on with Media Rights Capital, but with the workshops happening in New York, it looks like Luhrmann has made up his mind.
