Gael Garcia Bernal Cast As Boxing Legend Roberto Duran in HANDS OF STONE
In the upcoming film HANDS OF STONE Gael Garcia Bernal will play lightweight boxer Roberto Duran.
Produced by Ben Silverman, Hands of Stone will follow the story of the infamous “no mas” fight between Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard.
The match took place in the Louisiana Superdome in 1980, and ended with Leonard beating Duran in eight rounds. During the last seconds of the final round, Duran turned his back on Leonard saying “no mas” (no more in Spanish).
Hands of Stone is written by Jonathan Jakubowicz who will also direct and produce the picture. The film is not yet fully greenlit, but Jakubowicz is hoping it will appeal to the Hispanic market.
¨Roberto Duran is not only the best lightweight of all time, he’s also an inspiration for oppressed people around the world, and a legendary hero for those who believe a culture’s honor can be fought in the ring,” says Jakubowicz.
Al Pacino is also eye up the role of boxing trainer Roy Arcel. A production date has yet to be set.

As a HUGE fan of Gael Garcia Bernal (ever since Y Tu Mama Tambien) and also as a Calif. tourist stuck in the Superdome during Katrina I look forward to seeing this movie when it debuts.
