AVATAR Named Most Pirated Movie of 2010
Well it certainly won a lot of nominations and awards this year, but somehow I don’t think that the creators of Avatar were necessarily looking forward to also getting the rather dubious honor of being the most pirated movie of 2010.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar was downloaded from torrent websites a mind-blowing 16,580,000 times. That also represents a 33% increase in download activity over last year’s top-pirated film, Star Trek, which itself was downloaded just over 11 million times.
Then again, something tells me that Avatar’s distributor, 20th Century Fox probably isn’t too worried by the news either. After all, it did gross nearly 2.8 billion at the worldwide box office and became the highest-grossing movie of all time. That’s not counting the home revenue either, which isn’t known yet, but the initial DVD release broke sales records too.
It seems that not having 3D glasses didn’t do much to stop pirates from watching at home, despite the fact that Director James Cameron has said that 3D filmmaking is the industry’s best hope to stop rampant pirating.
Second on the list is Kick-Ass, which was downloaded 11,400,000 times in 2010.
Coming in third is Inception with 9,270,000 downloads. Given that the film has been the top pirated film for the past couple months, my money is on it eventually beating out Avatar, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Number nine on the list is Academy Award winner for Best Picture, The Hurt Locker, with nearly 7 million downloads. Currently producers of the film are in the middle of a lawsuit against thousands of those pirates, perhaps because it was also the lowest-grossing film on the list as well, with just under $50 million worldwide at the box office.
Here’s the rest of the list of the 10 most pirated films and number of downloads as recorded by TorrentFreak:
