THE KINGS SPEECH, TOY STORY 3, BLUE VALENTINE Ineligible for WGA Awards
While being recognized as highly acclaimed scripts for this year, several high profile films will not be eligible for a Writers Guild of America Award. According to the rules of the WGA, nominations are restricted to films written for signatories of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement. Basically, the WGA is set up to honor the best films only
WGA by members produced under the WGA’s MBA or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of an affiliate Guild; not Hollywood as a whole.
Among the films that will not receive WGA nominations are BLUE VALENTINE, THE KINGS SPEECH, TOY STORY 3, and ANOTHER YEAR – all of which are in the running for Oscars. This won’t be the first year that the WGA hasn’t nominated buzz films. By the same rules last year, Inglorious Basterds and District 9 were among the films not honored at the WGA Awards.
While larger films will be missed on the ballot, the WGA does have some of the high profile films of 2010 on their ballot. BLACK SWAN, INCEPTION, THE TOWN, THE FIGHTER, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT are all in the running for a WGA Award.
