Lena Headey To Play Karl Urban’s Rival In DREDD
The talented Lena Headey will soon be seen in a new role – this time, one of a villainous nature. TheWrap.com confirms that the 300 star, last seen in The Sarah Connor Chronicles, has been cast as Karl Urban’s main enemy in Pete Travis’ futuristic action film DREDD.
Urban (Star Trek, Lord of the Rings) stars as the justice-seeking anti-hero Judge Dredd, a role originated by Sylvestor Stallone in a 1995 adaptation. In the new version, Headey will pkay Ma-Ma, the matriarch of a drug gang that deals the reality-altering narcotic SLO-MO from its headquarters in Peace Tree City Block. Olivia Thirlby will also star as Urban’s psychic-powered sidekick.
In the initial screenplay, written by Alex Garland (Never Let Me Go) it should be noted that Ma-Ma was described as an overweight, heavily-scarred woman in her late 50s/early 60s. Whether or not the role will be re-written for Headey remains unseen at this time. The film, currently in production in South Africa, is expected to be released by Lions Gate in 2012.
Although I’m used to Headey playing on the good side, I have a feeling her tough-girl vibe will have no problem finding its way into a more evil character. What do you think?
