A Guide To Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone
Welcome to the first month of our Harry Potter movie challenge! We’re about halfway through January, and we at Daemon’s Movies wanted to see how you were doing with your HP challenge! Hopefully a few of you have had a chance to carve out some time to watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but if you haven’t no worries! There is still plenty of time to catch the first film and write your review or opinion piece.
Remember, you can find all of the rules for the contest here – and we look forward to seeing those reviews or opinion pieces come in!
If you haven’t singed up yet for the Harry Potter movie challenge (or the book challenge!) – there is still time! We’d love to have you on board, and can pretty much guarantee that you’ll enjoy yourself.
Now, for those of you new to the wonderful world of Harry Potter, or even those veterans that are watching – Harry’s world can sometimes be a little overwhelming. Well, don’t worry – that’s what I’m here for! I’ll help you ease yourself into Hogwarts, Privet Drive, Diagon Alley, and help you get familiar with the characters that will come into play in the films.
If you’re already a pro and know all there is to know about Harry, I’d still welcome your opinions and comments! I’m sure there are things I’ll overlook and forget! I won’t spoil anything about the film (or book) in this mid-month “guide”, but if you have any questions regarding issues that I don’t go into detail about, feel free to comment below! I can also tend to be long winded about Harry, so buckle in. Now onto the good stuff.
I’ve been told by people that aren’t as quite as obsessed as I am with Harry Potter that the characters are somewhat hard to keep track of. In Sorcerer’s Stone, we’re introduced to A LOT of people, and some we don’t really need to be concerned with right now. I’ve pulled out the important ones:
Harry James Potter: Seems like a good place to start. Harry is 11 years old and has just found out that he is a wizard by birth – his parent’s were great wizards before they died. Harry has lived with the Dursley’s his entire life, and hasn’t been treated the best. He has a small lightening bolt shaped scar on his forehead, which comes into play through the entire series.
Ron Weasley: Ron is one of seven children, and he and Harry meet on the Hogwart’s express. The pair become friends quickly, and are inseparable. Ron’s family doesn’t have all the money in the world, and Ron tends to get a little touchy about this.
Hermione Granger: Another student at Hogwarts, Hermione is brilliant. She always has the right answer for any question, and is somewhat of a know-it-all. She is the top student of her first year class, but doesn’t seem to have a lot of friends because of her teacher’s pet attitude.
Draco Malfoy: Pale, with blond hair, and money oozing out of his ears, Malfoy dislikes Harry from the beginning. He’s spoiled, snooty, and just all around unlikeable. But remember his name – you’ll need to in the future!
Rubeus Hagrid: is the first magical person that Harry has substantial contact with, and becomes Harry’s good friend at Hogwarts (Hagrid is the grounds keeper at the school). You will get to know him as just Hagrid. So much in fact, that I sometimes forget that he has a first name.
Professor Quirinus Quirrell: Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, Quirrell has had a few too many run ins with the things that he teaches about. He wears a turban filled with garlic to ward off vampires, and speaks with a stutter. You will never need to know his first name – so don’t worry!
Professor Severus Snape: Potions master at Hogwarts, Snape has it out for Harry the moment he steps foot into the school. Snape is known for not being the nicest professor to ever hit Hogwarts, and also favors students of the Slytherin house. He is the head of the Slytherin house.
Professor Minerva McGonagall: Head of Gryffindor house, Professor McGonagall teaches Transfiguration at Hogwarts. She is stern (but fair!), and is a sitckler for not breaking the rules.
Albus Dumbledore: The Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He has long white hair, blue eyes, and always wears his half moon glasses. Dumbledore is the greatest wizard ever, and He Who Must Not Be Named is afraid of him.
He Who Must Not Be Named: Voldemort. The Dark Lord himself. He was a wizard that went VERY, VERY bad, killed a slew of people, and scared the crap out of the wizarding world. His name is never spoken in magical circles, only Dumbledore dares to say his name out loud. Remember him, he’s sort of important.
PHEW!!! Okay, that covers the important characters of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone… or at least the ones that I could mention without spoiling major plot points. It’s a lot of information to swallow, and there’s more to come (Quidditch anyone?), so check back next week for more on our Harry Potter guide!
