Are Rental Kiosks More Popular Than Retail Stores?
In a study from the NPD Group, kiosks surpassed in store DVD rentals by 4%. Kiosks like Redbox are growing rapidly in popularity, while physical stores like Blockbuster are dropping slowly. According to NPD, the marketshare for kiosks was 31% while retails stores trailed by 27% in the third quarter of 2010. Subscription rentals like Netflix have the highest marketshare with 41%.
And these results are even with the 28-day lapse from rental location to kiosk that some major studios have implemented for their films.
These numbers show that consumer behavior is changing drastically. Last year, Netflix and other subscription rental companies were neck in neck with retail chains for marketshare.
This study was focused primarily on physical disc rentals – none of the streaming services or video on demand (think iTunes and Amazon) were factored into the totals.
What do you think about this? How do you rent movies? Netflix, Redbox, or do you go to the retail store?
