Naomi Watts Cast in J. EDGAR
Wow, it seems like I’m reporting on a new member joining the cast of J. EDGAR nearly every day. And on that note I have, yep you guessed, more casting news about the film. According to Deadline.com, Naomi Watts is the latest addition to the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic.
Watts is set to play the role of Helen Gandy, J. Edgar Hoover’s loyal secretary for 54 years. Hoover (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) called her indispensible and she was the ultimate keeper of his secrets, as well as a behind the scenes influence on the workings of the FBI. Gandy spent weeks destroying his personal file after Hoover died, containing the incriminating material that he used to manipulate and control the most powerful figures in D. C.
The role of Gandy was once attached to Charlize Theron, before decided to play the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman. Before that, Watts had apparently been thefrontrunner, but the studio had been also considering other actresses because it looked like her schedule wouldn’t work out. It has.
Joining DiCaprio and Watts in the film are Ed Westwick as Agent Smith, a clean-cut operative hired by Hoover to write his biography; Josh Lucas as aviator Charles Lindbergh; Damon Herriman as Bruno Hauptmann, the German immigrant accused of kidnapping Lindbergh’s 20-month baby in 1932. Hauptmann’s trial (called the crime of the century) was a major case for Hoover; Ken Howard is playing U. S. attorney General Harlan F. Stone and Armie Hammer is set to play Clyde Tolson, Hoover’s alleged lover. Erica Huggins is exec producer.
