THE KING’S SPEECH May Be Edited For PG-13 Rating

Have you seen THE KING’S SPEECHyet? If you’re waiting until after the Oscar ceremonies occur, you may see a different version than you would have a few months ago. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s executive producer Harvey Weinstein is considering an idea that involves re-editing the R-rated movie in order to get a PG-13 or even a PG rating. Weinstein’s move would be part of a marketing strategy that is intended to increase the appeal of the film in younger audiences and bring in more family members who would be able to watch the movie together.
In Great Britian, the movie carries a 12-and-over rating, and has been at the top of the box office for three consecutive weekends. Weinstein has made it no secret that this fact has encouraged him to push forward with his idea for changing the rating in the US. If the proposed idea is approved, the new version most likely wouldn’t be completed until after the Oscar telecast on February 27th.
The King’s Speech received 12 Oscar nominations Tuesday, the most of any film this year. The Weinstein’s are also planning to expand the film to 2,500 theaters domestically this weekend, up from 1,680.
Have you seen The King’s Speech and do you think that it can work with a lower movie rating? Should Weinstein leave well enough alone, based on the film’s already successful run?
