GREAT EXPECTATIONS Adaptation To Be Directed By Mike Newell

British director Mike Newell, fresh off his work from 2010′s Price of Persia: Sands of Time, has his next project in the works – a new take on the Charles Dickens classic GREAT EXPECTATIONS. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Newell will helm the film, which is set to be part of a year-round celebration of Charles Dickens’s bicentenary in 2012.
The film will be produced by Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen. Newell’s story will center on an orphan who winds up as a wealthy gentleman when he receives a generous amount of money from an unknown benefactor.
2012 will be a big year for Dickens, as the BBC plans to run a season devoted to the author, which will include new dramas and documentaries. Additionally, The British Film Institute will unveil the largest retrospective of film and television adaptations of the author’s work. The exhibit in London will launch a global tour in 2012 that includes stops in New York and Paris.
