Russia And Other Countries Will Change CAPTAIN AMERICA Title To THE FIRST AVENGER
The Paramount Pictures’ film CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will go through a name change before its release in Russia, South Korea and the Ukraine. The LA Times reports that in these three countries, Captain America will simply be called THE FIRST AVENGER.
This decision was made by Marvel, Paramount’s international team and distributors from the countries based on market research results. They want it to be clear that the title change is not political or cultural, but more a move for branding and consumer awareness.
Apparently there were plans to change the title in several international markets, but the Captain America name was branded well enough that the decision didn’t happen – but the recognition didn’t cross over to Russia, South Korea, or the Ukraine.
Name changes aren’t uncommon for American films to international markets, but this particular change follows this statement from Captain America director Joe Johnston:
“He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver. He’s just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don’t change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier; you have to stay who you are inside, that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything. It’ll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate . the idea that this is not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing,” the director said. “It’s an international cast and an international story. It’s about what makes America great and what make the rest of the world great too.”
Captain America will star Chris Evans as the Superhero and his alter ego Steve Rogers, who volunteers for a government program to create an army of super-soldiers. The film is directed by Johnston (Jurassic Park III, Jumanji), and written by Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, and Joss Whedon.
Captain America will be released in the US on July 22nd, and international theaters have release dates as late as August 12th.
