5 Most Romantic Movie Moments
To know them is to love (or hate) them, and we all know them. The film industry is notorious for giving us the most romantic, wonderful, and just over all disgustingly sweet moments of all time. And then expect us to have lasting relationships with people that AREN’T Rhett Butler.
But I digress. That’s why it’s fiction, right?
Regardless of my bitterness that I will never have a relationship along the lines of Harry and Sally, may I present (in no particular order) 5 of the most romantic movie moments. Fair warning – I may fangirl slightly during this article.
[Warning: There might be spoilers for the movies mentioned.]
When Heath Ledger dances across the bleachers in TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU to impress Kat? Come on now, what woman WOULDN’T melt if a guy enlisted an ENTIRE MARCHING BAND to help pull off a stunt like that?
Did I mention that he sings? And dances? In a football stadium? *sigh*
I don’t even know where to START with MOULIN ROUGE, it’ is FULL of romantic moments.
Let’s just do this:
What girl doesn’t want a Westley? The guy battled pirates, a few of the R. O. U. S – es(?), and came back from the DEAD to find Buttercup.
The most romantic part of THE PRINCESS BRIDE? When Prince Humperdinck finds Westley and Buttercup (right after the storming of the castle) and challenges Westley.
Despite recovering from being “mostly dead”, Westley launches into a monologue about taking Humperdinck “to the pain” (as opposed to “to the death”) and the very last moment when he stands up, points his sword at the prince and tells him to: “Drop. Your. Sword.”
As you wish, Westley. As you wish.
What I love about THE NOTEBOOK is that it’s a love story that will make you want to jump off of a bridge but that is done very WELL. Noah and Allie are two of the best characters in a romance EVER.
The Notebook, like Moulin Rouge has a lot of romantic moments, but my favorite?
When Allie comes back to Noah after leaving him for Lon and their passionate and tear jerking fight where he tells her that she’s a “pain in the ass 99% of the time” and then their kiss in the rain. So fantastic.
When Mark arrives at Juliet’s door and she opens it to him holding up cardboard signs about how perfect she is and how much he loves her.
Why is he holding up cards? Because she’s married to his best friend. It sounds horrible, I know, but it is the most ROMANTIC moment of LOVE ACTUALLY and will forever be one of my favorites ever.
All of these movies at one point have just about drove me over the edge. which, isn’t that the mark that a scene is particularly well done? Regardless that these scenes are things that will NEVER happen in real life and set unrealistic expectations for men everywhere, they are some of the best and most romantic scenes out there.
Keep them coming Hollywood!
I know I missed a lot – what are your favorites?

I am such a sucker for romantic movies. I love your choices and have seen them all so many times, but I think my top five would be:
Casablanca (“We’ll always have Paris”);
Say Anything (Surprisingly not the boombox scene, but when Diane goes to Lloyd when he’s kickboxing and he asks if she needs somebody or she needs him. Kills me every time.);
Brokeback Mountain (When Ennis opens the wardrobe and we see Jack’s shirts);
Chasing Amy (Holden’s speech to Alyssa);
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (“Fred’ and Holly in the rain at the end).
Those are ALL excellent. Say Anything was on my list, but not that scene… it was the boombox scene….lol. I want a guy to stand outside my window with “In Your Eyes” blaring.
Casablanca is one that I haven’t seen in YEARS – but I remember sobbing during most of it.
Chasing Amy is a GREAT choice. One that I can honestly say that I would never have thought of!
Oh that Brokeback Mountain scene broke my heart.
Oh, you’re killing me! No love for Dirty Dancing?? “Nobody puts Baby in a corner…” or when they FINALLY do the lift at the end and everyone is watching them and… *sigh* I could cry just thinking about it!
Another one that’s great is at the end of Pretty Woman when he climbs the fire escape to get to her. Lovely!
I figured you’d comment about Dirty Dancing!
But you’re right, it IS a good one to add to the list. As is Pretty Woman, not only the fire escape scene, but the necklace scene as well.
First of all, this list makes me want to pull out all my romantic movies and make a day of it! You picked some pretty awesome ones Kelly. The Notebook!!!! And Love Actually, OMG that scene only makes it worth watching the movie. And Moulin Rouge, these are all some of my favorites.
A few additional ones for me would be:
Pride and Prejudice (2005) – Darcy’s unusual declaration of love.
August Rush – I think the whole movie is like a love letter or something.
Romeo & Juliet – The Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes one. When they look at each other across the aquarium. Classic!
I’m sure there are tons more, but I can’t think of more.
Pride and Prejudice and Romeo & Juliet were REALLY close on this list. They are two of the most romantic movies after all.
Even the aquarium scene aside – the END of Romeo & Juliet is romantic… while being extremely depressing.
I’ve never seen August Rush. I started watching it, got depressed, and had to turn it off..lol.
Oh Kelly, you HAVE to finish watching August Rush, such a great movie. I personally loved it and I think I’ve seen it 2-3 times already 🙂 Plus the music is great.
I have added it to my list!!
