5 Movie Couples That Wouldn’t Happen In Real Life
We all have our favorites. Ross and Rachel, Buttercup and Westley, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.
But do we ever really stop to think about what these couples would be like if they actually existed in real life? I know I don’t. I’m perfectly content to believe that Johnny and Baby are still living happily ever after!
But how many movie couples have we seen that just WOULDN’T work in real life? This was a tough call for me, because what do you base this on? Looks? Social standing? Personality? I tried to do a little of all factors and came up with these five couples.
[Warning: There might be spoilers for the movies mentioned.]
While I love, love, LOVE (LOVE!!) the story of Jack and Rose it really isn’t historically possible that the two would ever have crossed paths aboard the doomed TITANIC.
As a third class passenger, Jack would never have been allowed up on the deck to even see Rose, much less get a chance to save her from jumping over board.
Regardless, their story is still extremely romantic.
While it is sort of the entire point of the movie, there is no way that Alison (Katherine Heigl) and Ben (Seth Rogen) would ever make it in outside the fictional world of KNOCKED UP. She’s the responsible, down to earth, has everything figured out type. While he’s an adult version of a 15 year old.
Not saying that opposites don’t attract or that people have to have EVERYTHING in common, that’s absolutely not true. But to have a straight laced and career driven woman and a complete slacker in a lasting relationship? I find it hard to picture Alison even entertaining the thought of moving forward with a relationship. How would they function? What would be their common ground? (I’m taking the baby out of this scenario, obviously.)
They have nothing to talk about, nothing in common, and only end up hooking up because they were drunk (and by drunk I mean WASTED). And yes, he grows up (somewhat) in the end, but assuming he and Alison are real people and a story wasn’t written for them? I don’t foresee this relationship happening.
While not the traditional “couple” Oscar and Felix are a set of friends that probably wouldn’t last if they actually existed. I understand that all relationships don’t have to match personality points EXACTLY, but a little common ground is necessary between romantic partners OR friends.
And Oscar and Felix don’t have it! One is neat, the other is a slob. One is laid back, the other is rigid, etc, etc, etc. They’d end up killing each other before the first month was up on their lease!
Note: I do want to note here that I understand that different roommate types can co-exist without killing each other. BUT, most roommates/friendships do have at least one or two similar traits which is lacking in this relationship.
I cannot stress enough how much I adore THE BREAKFAST CLUB. But there are two relationships that would NOT exist if these people were real.
Why did I pick these two? Well, let’s go back to high school. Think about the cliques and how the different social groups never ran with different crowds. For crying out loud this is the BASIS of The Breakfast Club!
While I love the idea of both of these couples, no way that a high school princess (especially one like Claire!) would date a guy like Bender. What would her friends say? High school kids (especially girls) are NASTY to “outsiders” that try to infiltrate into their cliques. Throw in that Claire is one of the popular kids, and is really, REALLY desperate for approval from everyone around her – the second one of her friends turned on her for dating Bender would be enough to have her call it quits.
Not to put a damper on a classic, but CINDERELLA is the be-all end-all of couples that would never exist in real life. A prince and a kitchen maid? Granted, Cinderella’s father has some money and social standing, but not enough for Cinderella to bag herself a prince!
Royal ball or no royal ball, would the Prince even CONSIDER a girl like Cinderella? And what progressive kingdom are they living in where a prince can choose his bride? Aren’t those relationships normally set up by the King?
But that’s why it’s called a fairy tale!
There they are – 5 movie couples that you wouldn’t see in real life, all for (hopefully!) different reasons. Let me know what you think and who you would add!
