5 Movies With Really Cool Opening Scenes
There are some movies where the opening sequence just jumps out and makes you realize that you’re in for something REALLY special.
Who could forget the opening scene of The Dark Knight when we met the new Joker? Here are five other movies with great opening scenes.
[Warning: There might be spoilers for the movies mentioned.]
When something is spoofed as often as the opening of STAR WARS you know that you’ve got a great thing on your hands.
Who doesn’t know what the scrolling story set to the great theme song means? Not only are we given that epic opening, but right after we’re dropped into the middle of a battle scene in space!
I decided to add this one because I find it to be a perfect start to ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
Patricia Quinn, who plays Magenta in the film, lipped synced the words to “Science Fiction Double Feature” and her red lips against a black background are the only thing in the opening of Rocky Horror.
A quirky start to an equally quirky movie. Fantastic.
Not many movies have as memorable an opening sequence as JAWS. The movie that made people “afraid to go into the water” probably did so because of the opening scene.
It’s nighttime, and a couple stumbles drunkenly down the beach. The young girl strips off her clothes and runs into the waves, yelling at her friend to get in the water.
Then the camera cuts close to her face a she’s treading water and a small jerk pulls her down a little. All of a sudden her face turns from a smile to fear as she dragged back and forth by something under the water, and her friend is passed out on the beach.
Screaming and thrashing, after what seems like forever, she’s pulled under the surface and everything is calm once again. TERRIFYING.
When young Michael Myers kills his family with his giant kitchen knife, the opening scene is one of the best of HALLOWEEN.
We’re shown Michael’s point of view from the moment he puts on the clown mask, when he picks up the knife, and all through all of his kills. Not only THAT scene is amazing, but the establishing scene of the house before we’re taken into Michael’s mask is done in one shot – no camera cuts.
Pretty awesome for an opening sequence.
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY has one of my favorite opening scenes. One of the main points of the film is that Willy Wonka is giving away five golden tickets inside his candy bars.
The opening credits show the assembly line from melted chocolate, into a solid, into the embossing of the Wonka logo, and then the ticket being placed into the wrapper, and then packed away in a shipping box.
I remember when I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the theater I left thinking that the opening credits were some of the best that I’d seen. They’re fun, they’re off of the normal opening credits, and there’s no mistaking that you’re watching a Tim Burton film.
