Blue Valentine’s Michelle Williams to Make Magic as Glinda in OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL?
I’m starting to get excited for Disney’s OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL because the casting sounds so good. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest actress to be offered a role is Michelle Williams.
Williams is in talks to play Glinda the good witch in the Sam Raimi-directed movie that features Oz (James Franco) as a snake-oil salesman who lands in Oz and teams with Glinda to fight for control of the realm. Competing with Oz and Glinda will be Glinda’s two sisters, Evanora (Rachel Weisz is in talks for this role) and Theodora (Mila Kunis). Evanora is the evil witch and after a lovelorn Theodora is rebuffed by Franco’s character, Evanora tries to lure her to the dark side.
Because Weisz has also been offered the female lead in the upcoming Bourne film and the shooting schedules for the two films would overlap, her negotiations have been complicated. Hopefully a deal can be worked out.
If Williams does sign on as Glinda, it will be a big departure for her, since she has been acting almost solely in the indie world since Dawson’s Creek ended, most recently in the much-heralded Blue Valentine, for which she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Williams will next be seen in My Week with Marilyn.
I think Williams could be a wonderful Glinda and that it would be great to see her have success in a big studio film. What do you think?
