LA Film Festival 2011 Review: NATURAL SELECTION
“Lisa White Has Found Her Son. God Help Her.”
I think this is a perfect way to start talking about NATURAL SELECTION, which I was lucky enough to see at the Los Angeles Film Festival. My curiosity about the film was peeked when I saw a clip from it (you can watch the clip in question for yourself below at the end of the review) and I am so happy that I listened to my instinct about it.
Natural Selection stars Rachel Harris as Linda White a married woman, who finds out that her husband had a whole part of his life that she didn’t know about, when her husband has a stroke. Turns out, her husband had been giving out sperm for years, and when it sounds like her husband’s wish is for her to find his son, Linda takes it upon herself to find him. That is how she finds Raymond (Matt O’Leary), a convict who has just escaped from prison in a really unusual fashion (I won’t spoil it but I’ve never seen that in any other movie).
Ensues a road trip back home full of surprises.
I absolutely loved Natural Selection. It was such a beautiful, well structured story. But that’s only part of it.
Rachel Harris whom I had only seen in a few movies in secondary roles, is absolutely fantastic! Her portrayal of Linda is so on point for this seemingly weak character, who ends up having more strength that she even knew. Another break out star of the film is Matt O’Leary who plays Raymond. I had never seen him in anything else before, but wow, he’s amazing and you better watch out for him.
A lot of the film relies on the chemistry between Linda and Raymond, and let me tell you, these two are not only hilarious together, there is just something that clicked and made the whole journey that much more enjoyable.
So far this movie is at the top of my list not only for the LAFF, but so far this year. Yep, that’s how good it is. And in you live in LA and are now dying to see it, because it was so popular at the Festival, they have added an extra screening date for it TODAY, Friday, June 24th, at 10:10pm at the Regal Cinemas L.A. Live 8. You can purchase the tickets at the door. So if you’re able to go check it out.
Here is the clip that convinced me to watch the movie.
