TANNER HALL Movie Review – A Cute Coming of Age Story
I had had my eye on TANNER HALL for quite some time (since September 2009 to be exact) because after seeing the trailer and photos, it sounded like something right up my alley. And I was right, it was right up my alley.
Tanner Hall follows Fernanda (Rooney Mara) a senior at Tanner Hall, an all-girl boarding school in New England. As her senior year is about to begin, Fernanda will have to face some changes when her manipulative trouble-maker childhood friend Victoria (Georgia King) is forced to attend Tanner Hall as well.
In addition to Fernanda and Victoria, we also meet Fernanda’s friends, the sexy Kate (Brie Larson), who loves to make her teachers nervous, and tomboy Lucasta (Amy Ferguson), who’s struggling with some new feelings she has towards another classmate.
As the year progresses, Fernanda begins a friendship with Gio (Tom Everett Scott), an older family friend, and decides it’s time to take some risks. However, Victoria’s jealousy threatens her new plans.
Finally, as each girl dabbles in adulthood, they soon realize everything isn’t as exciting as they thought and they will have to face the consequences of their actions together.
Tanner Hall can be quite simply described as a female coming of age film and I really liked it. As I mentioned above this is the type of film I always enjoy watching, coming of age films are a sure way to get my attention, so Tanner Hall already had that going for it.
The story itself is nothing too original, but it doesn’t really matter because the performances were strong and the story compelling.
So far I have only seen Rooney Mara in The Social Network, but it’s no surprise she’s a rising star (she will appear in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo next), there is something about her presence on screen that makes it hard to look away.
In Tanner Hall there is so much internal life going on when she’s on screen, it makes her character three dimensional and relatable.
The rest of the cast ties the whole movie together and while Fernanda is the main character of the story, the cast surrounding her ties it all together and makes the movie come alive.
Overall, Tanner Hall is a very enjoyable film that will please coming of age lovers like me.
The movie comes out to limited theaters today, September 9th, so make sure to go see it.
