RESTLESS Movie Review
RESTLESS is Gus Van Sant’s latest film about a beautiful cancer patient Annabel Cotton (Mia Wasikowska) and Enoch Brae (Henry Hopper), a young man who has lost his taste for living after his parents died in a accident.
The two meet at a funeral and start a unique relationship. Both have an unorthodox take on life, Enoch’s best friend, Hiroshi Takahashi, is the ghost of a Kamikaze fighter pilot, and Annabel has a fascination with Charles Darwin and how creatures live.
As the two fall in love they decide to face what life throws at them together, but unfortunately that’s easier said than done and Enoch and Annabel soon realize that there isn’t much time left to do everything they’d like to do.
I’m usually a big fan of coming of age stories and if you throw in one of the characters dying, then you’ve got my full attention (it sounds wrong doesn’t it?!). I’m just a sucker for those dramatic story lines, so I was really excited to see Restless. Unfortunately, the film didn’t live up to my expectations. Now don’t get me wrong, it was pretty good, I just didn’t fall in love with it.
I tend to like quirky characters, but in this case, there were parts of Enoch and Annabel that were more irritating than endearing, which of course made it hard to really relate to them.
On the other hand, I did enjoy the character of Hiroshi quite a lot. I actually would have liked to find out more about him.
As for the story, it had some slow moments, but overall it kept me interested. This is a character study, so a lot of it rested on the characters, which as I mentioned above had some good and bad parts.
As for the performances, Mia Wasikowska and newcomer Henry Hopper have interesting chemistry together and I enjoyed watching both of their performances. In fact, they are a big factor in what made the film enjoyable.
Overall, Restless was enjoyable, but ultimately just ok for me. However, if you enjoy coming of age stories, you might want to give it a chance.
Restless is now playing in theaters (limited). In the meantime, you can take a look at the trailer for the film below.
