“Catching Fire” Finds Director In Francis Lawrence!
By now, you’ve probably heard that Gary Ross won’t be back to direct the sequel to his successful adaptation of The Hunger Games, stating lack of prep time as his departure reasons. This left Lionsgate looking for someone suitable to helm Catching Fire, and as Deadline reports, it came down to two contenders: Moneyball‘s Bennet Miller and Francis Lawrence.
Miller asked Lionsgate to push back their late August production start date (Miller wanted to film Foxcatcher with Steve Carell), and rumors abounded that the director role would go to Lawrence. The Water for Elephants director is now confirmed as director of Catching Fire and will start production before Fox calls on Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence to start the second installment of X-Men: First Class.
Prior to Water for Elephants Francis Lawrence directed I Am Legend, the post apocalyptic sci-fi film starring Will Smith, as well as the 2005 horror film Constantine. His credits also include music videos for Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Green Day.
What do you think about this director decision? Lawrence has shown that he has the right style for a film like Catching Fire, I’m intrigued to see his concept for the sequel!
