‘Headhunters’ Movie Review – A Thrilling Ride
Headhunters is a Norwegian action thriller film that will leave you on the edge of your seat for most of its duration.
The film tells the story of Roger (Aksel Hennie), Norway’s most successful corporate headhunter, who despite seemingly having everything, including a beautiful model-looking wife Diana and a spectacular villa, also happens to be a very skilled art thief. While Roger has never been caught, as he tells the audience at the beginning of the film, the life of an art thief can only end one of two ways: 1) he steals something so big he never has to steal again, 2) he gets caught. Either of these options would have been great for Roger, but instead he met Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).
Clas Greve is not only the perfect candidate for the CEO position of the GPS company Pathfinder that Roger is currently recruiting for, but he is in possession of a very valuable painting. Roger sees it as his chance to get his biggest score ever and finally become financially stable. Unfortunately, he runs into a little bit of trouble, and when I mean little bit of trouble, I mean a life or death situation.
I didn’t know much about Headhunters before seeing it, and the little I knew didn’t prepare me for what an insane trip it would be. It really is a hunt in all the senses of the word. There are so many twists and turns that I honestly wasn’t sure they would be able to wrap it up in a satisfactory way, but they did. And they did it in an ingenious way, which makes the film even better for it.
But the story is only part of it. Aksel Hennie is really fantastic as Roger. He managed to make you hate part of him, feel empathy for him and root for him (now and again at the same time!). Roger is not your typical hero, he definitely has flaws, but he is put through so much that it’s hard not to cheer him on.
And let’s not forget Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, whom some of you might recognize as Jaime Lannister from HBO’s Game of Thrones series. I don’t want to say too much about his character, but his character is definitely memorable.
Director Morten Tyldum has created a fantastic thrill ride with Headhunters, and if you’re a fan of these types of movies, you’re in for a real treat with this one.
Headhunters is out to theaters in New York and Los Angeles today, Friday, April 27th. So if it’s playing in a theater near you, go see it.
