‘Seeking a Friend for the End of the World’ Review – Who Do You Want Next To You?
I was really excited to see Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. The trailer made it sound like a sweet romantic comedy and I was totally in for that. However, what I didn’t expect was to get much more than a typical romantic comedy. I certainly didn’t expect the movie to make me think about my life and for it to have so much heart and humor.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens with Dodge (Steve Carell) sitting in his car with his wife listening to the radio which tells them that the last hope to destroy the asteroid headed to destroy earth has failed, which only leaves humanity with 3 weeks to left live. With that, Dodge’s wife runs out of the car. Dodge goes back to his regular routine, even showing up to work, but that is until he has an encounter with his neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley) who is really upset about never seeing her family again. Through a few different events, Dodge and Penny end up on the road together to find Dodge’s long lost love. And that’s where I’m going to stop with the story, because what follows needs to be experienced watching the film.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World could have been a typical romantic comedy without any layers, but writer/director Lorene Scafaria took it a few steps further and delivered a film that explores human connections and takes you on a journey examining different people’s reaction to the impending doom.
One of my favorite parts of the movie is Steve Carell’s performance. If you had any doubt about what an amazing actor he is, this movie puts them all to rest. There is something very genuine about Dodge and Carell captures that perfectly. I still think about the last scene of the film because it affected me so much.
As for Keira Knightley, she might not shine as much as Carell, but she certainly holds her own. Her character is very different from Dodge but I think that’s what makes the whole story work.
I throughly enjoyed getting to know these two characters and follow them on their journey until the end of the world and I would highly recommend you take the trip as well.
