Stallone and Schwarzenegger Team Up to Bring ‘The Expendables 2’ to Comic-Con 2012
When you think of action heroes, you probably think of either Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger. They defined the genre and gave us so many of the great action flicks that are legends today. Now, they’ve teamed up for The Expendables 2, a sequel to the wildly popular film created by Stallone several years ago. Film Equals was at Comic-Con to hear all about this latest installment which might very well put hair on your chest in less than two hours.
Although not much was revealed about the plot in just the trailer, it seems as if the team of mercenaries has gathered together once again to take out a super villain, appropriately played by Jean-Claude Van Dam. Stallone had nothing but good things to say about the much-maligned action hero, reminding us all that everyone goes through their ups and downs, but a star is a star forever.
What immediately struck me was the rapport that Stallone has with his cast of action stars. They are all insanely beefed-up muscle men, but they are funny! And they seem to genuinely respect each other as actors and athletes, even the two stars who have been box-office rivals since the 1970’s. They each recounted the tale of their first meeting, at a Golden Globes ceremony many moons past, and it was clear that although they didn’t start off well, they have become friendly colleagues.
The film marks the return of Schwartzenegger, who took eight years off to govern California. He laughed as he recounted how the cast and crew tried to remind him how to make a movie for the first days of filming. The one thing that both Stallone and Schwartzenegger agree on is that getting older is hell on the joints. They spoke of iced knees and cortizone shots and how their bodies, although still far more fit and toned than the average person, simply don’t bounce back after the action sequences anymore.
This movie promises to be another great bro-flick from the men who have given us hours and hours of pulse-pounding thrills, but I believe it’s the passion for this genre that Stallone possesses which has turned this franchise into the latest in his long-history of successful franchises. As he says, one action hero is good, but a whole movie full of them is a ticket to blockbuster heaven.
The Expendables 2 bursts into theatres on August 17th, 2012.
