Comic-Con 2012: Robert Downey Jr. Gives the Early Scoop on ‘Iron Man 3’
Coming off the high of this summer’s mega-blockbuster, The Avengers, Iron Man 3 has just gone into production on what promises to be another amazing offering from this incredible Marvel universe. Film Equals was at Comic-Con to find out just what we should expect next summer.
The events of The Avengers will play a part in this film, Robert Downey Jr. says, in that Tony Stark will be dealing with the aftermath and figuring out how to be Ironman in a world that now has a team of superheroes. But make no mistake…this will be a solo show, although Stark’s relationship with Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes will be explored more within this film, as it was in the comic books. Iron Man 3 will also serve as the first of the next series of films leading up to The Avengers 2.
Another relationship that will be explored more will be Stark’s romance with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts, although both director Shane Black and producer Kevin Feige are understandably tight-lipped about any major developments. I speak for all fans of the pairing when I say, “Tony…put a ring on it.”
Cheadle is excited to suit-up again and promises that the Iron Man suit is even better in this film, although one wonders at this point…what can they possibly do next? There is little doubt, though, that the cast and crew are up to the challenge.
Certainly this will be the most anticipated film of 2013 and Robert Downey Jr. knows better than anyone the pressures and expectations that come with playing a superhero. But with all sincerity he says that he plays the part of Iron Man as if it was Shakespeare. It matters that much to him.
And it shows.
Iron Man 3 blazes into theatres on May 3rd, 2013.
