Comic-Con 2012: Elysium Panel With Neill Blomkamp, Matt Damon and Jodie Foster
It’s hard to judge a movie that’s still in production, especially when one has only been given a rough outline of the story and a couple of action scenes. But based on what little knowledge is available, Elysium, a new film from Neill Blomkamp, looks like it could be a very intriguing sci-fi movie…if it figures out a way to balance the two worlds of its story. Film Equals was at Comic-Con for an exclusive sneak peek.
In the not-too-distant-future of 2059, the 1% have fled the over-populated, barren Earth and relocated on their sanctuary in the stars, a space station called Elysium. Matt Damon plays an ex-con forced into a dangerous operation to enhance his body, but the purpose of this, as well as what it has to do with Elysium, is unclear from the footage played during the panel. The implication is that Damon’s character will try to bring equality to the masses of starving people left on Earth, but at this point, that’s only an educated guess.
Jodie Foster also stars as the villain, a strict secretary assigned to watch over Elysium and keep the hungry masses from breeching the station. Not much more was revealed about her character, but she looks to be an adversary, but not the kind who is going to take on Matt Damon with her bare hands.
Even though the CGI effects in the clips show were raw and unrefined, it’s clear this film will be a sweeping epic. No expense has been spared in the practical effects either. The enhancements that Damon endures aren’t exactly the Iroman suit, but they make what might have been an allegory of modern politics into a chance for some bi-partisan carmaderie as he prepares to take the rich people down. However, it’s doubtful that they’ll go without a fight.
Elysium opens in theatres on March 1st, 2013.
