Shailene Woodley Cast in ‘Divergent’ and ‘Spider-Man 2’
Shailene Woodley, who last year shot to movie stardom with her turn alongside George Clooney in ‘The Descendants’, has been offered one of the most highly sought-out roles in blockbuster cinema, and will play Mary Jane Watson in upcoming superhero sequel, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘. Woodley is best known for her role in TV’s recently cancelled ‘Secret Life of the American Teenager’.
Kirsten Dunst is well known for inhabiting the role in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy but this year’s reboot instead highlighted Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone) as the main love interest for Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. Director Marc Webb recently signed on to return for the sequel along with Stone and Garfield, and now Woodley sets things up for a love triangle. The role will reportedly be small with a view to expand in the planned third film.
The actress has also been cast in Summit/Lionsgate young adult adaptation, ‘Divergent‘, from Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name. Keeping with the post-apocalyptic themes made uber-popular by ‘The Hunger Games’ this summer, the film is set in a future world that has been split into different groups based on various personality traits. Woodley will star as the 16-year-old heroine who falls in love with a young man from a different faction.
