Oz: The Great and Powerful: And The Wicked Witch of The West Is…..
There has been a lot of guessing over who would end up becoming the infamous Wicked Witch of the West in Sam Raimi’s latest film Oz: The Great and Powerful, which takes a look at how the man, Oscar Diggs (played by James Franco), became the Wizard of Oz. With Michelle Williams playing Glinda the Good Witch, it only left Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz.
The recent teaser poster revealing the Wicked Witch of the West didn’t give us any more clues, however bets were made that Kunis might play the witch from some of the hints dropped at Comic-Con last year, and it seems they might have been right.
THR just released its Actress Roundtable article (and video if you want to watch it) featuring amongst others actresses Rachel Weisz who at some point talks about fighting to get the role of the Wicked Witch of the East, which I guess would in turn make Mila Kunis the Wicked Witch of the West.
Here is what Weisz had to say:
It’s interesting: I often get told, “Don’t go and read.” And last year I read the prequel to The Wizard of Oz, and this one character is really evil, the Wicked Witch of the East, and I thought, “I really love this role,” and no one wanted me and [director] Sam Raimi didn’t want me and I said, “I want to go and audition. That’s my job. I’m an actor.” It was one meeting, we sat and talked for a couple of hours, and he asked me a lot of interesting questions about my parents and my childhood. And the casting director read them with me and Sam kind of operated the camera.
Mystery solved? Maybe. Either way, can’t wait to see the movie.
Oz: The Great and Powerful will be released to theaters on March 8, 2013.
(Note: The THR discussion is really interesting and I would recommend watching the video. Some great insights.)
