Release Date Shuffle: ‘After Earth’ and ‘The Purge’ Swap Release Dates
With new releases each week, studios try their hardest to put their movies in spots where they can succeed with the least competition. Just last weekend, Oblivion scared away all the competition (and look at the box office numbers!).
In response to Man of Steel releasing June 14, M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth has moved from June 7 to May 31, 2013. The studio hopes it’ll have more legs before Superman rules audience’s wallets. The apocalypse film stars Will Smith and his son Jaden.
Interestingly, Universal’s The Purge chose the opposite directional shift. Instead of sticking around for the crowded May 31st date (Now You See Me also releases that weekend), they’ve moved back to June 7. James DeMonaco’s horror film has an extremely interesting premise – legalizing all crime for one day a year – and stars Ethan Hawke. It’ll go up against The Internship.
For those interested in these films, adjust your calendars accordingly!
