Casting Recap: Will Smith in ‘The Wild Bunch’, Christoph Waltz in ‘The Candy Store’, Chris Pines in ‘Stretch’, and Michael Pena in ‘Fury’
Yesterday was an especially heavy day for casting news. I’ve got what I consider the four biggest pieces of news, but you can follow the source below for even more (including news on Mandy Patinkin, Garrett Hedlund, and Dax Shepard). Here are the highlights:
Will Smith has signed on to The Wild Bunch remake. The 1969 western original is a highly regarded film, so it only makes sense it’d be remade. Since Tony Scott’s death, the film has been in limbo. A director and release date aren’t set, but it appears Smith with star and produce.
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) will lend his talents to Stephen Gaghan’s (Traffic) action adventure thriller The Candy Store. The interweaving Cold War piece also stars Robert De Niro and Jason Clarke. No release date on this either.
Chris Pine (Star Trek) will turn to comedy in Joe Carnahan’s (The Grey) Stretch. Pine’s role wasn’t revealed and Carnahan’s next project doesn’t have a set release date.
Michael Peña looks to be rejoining End of Watch director David Ayer in Fury. Brad Pitt previously joined the project, and it’s a WWII story about a severely outmanned five-man tank crew. The film is tentatively set to release November 14, 2014.
