‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’ Finds Directors in Oscar-Nominated Duo Behind ‘Kon-Tiki’
If any franchise needs a breath of fresh air, it’s certainly the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Critically-speaking, the franchise has been going downhill since the first one released in 2003. The same can’t be said financially, though, which somewhat explains why the franchise continues on.
Pirates of the Caribbean 5, the next installment, is set for release July 10, 2015. It’ll return Johnny Depp (the only cast member to appear in every movie in the franchise); however, it won’t return director Rob Marshall (he did On Stranger Tides) or Gore Verbinski (he did the first three).
It appears Disney settled on Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. They’re the pair behind last year’s Academy Award-nominated Kon-Tiki. This surprising choice (to some) could turn out to be a franchise-saver.
Only time will tell!
