Poster Mania: Planes, Kick-Ass 2, The Spectacular Now, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Fruitvale Station, Crystal Fairy, & Runner, Runner
In the inaugural Tuesday Poster Mania post, I will be covering recently released posters from the following movies: Planes, Kick-Ass 2, The Spectacular Now, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Fruitvale Station, Crystal Fairy, and Runner, Runner.
For yesterday’s Trailer post, click here (including one from The Spectacular Now).
Four character posters for the Cars spin-off Planes released with cute little tag lines. I’m a little disappointed the film isn’t being handled by Pixar. However, it still looks to be a fun movie. Look for it on August 9; it’s directed by Klay Hall (Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure)
Kick-Ass 2, Jeff Wadlow’s sequel to the surprise (at least to me) 2010 hit Kick-Ass returns Chloe Grace Moretz (Dark Shadows) and Aaron Johnson (Anna Karenina). The new poster shows the addition of Jim Carrey who is making headlines for a different reason this week. Even though Carrey won’t promote the film, Kick-Ass 2 will follow a week after Planes on August 16. (Source: Empire)
Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley’s budding romance in The Spectacular Now is on display in their newest poster. The prom couple looks pretty happy here (having seen the film, it’s during one of the happiest parts of the movie), but spoiler alert: not all is cherry between these two. The romantic drama, directed by James Ponsoldt (Smashed), hits theaters August 2.
Two character posters for Justin Chadwick’s biographical film, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, about Nelson Mandela released as well. The film, due to release August 29, follows Nelson Mandela’s life. It stars Idris Elba (HBO’s The Wire) and Naomie Harris (Skyfall).
Fruitvale Station, the Sundance smash-hit (and one of my most anticipated indies of the year), and The Weinstein Company continued to roll out marketing. Ryan Coogler’s debut follows a guy on an ill-fated New Year’s Eve/Day. The story of 22-year old Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan) is unfortunately based on a true story. The drama will release July 26 in the U.S.
Far and away the weirdest poster belongs to Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Silva’s Crystal Fairy. It shows star Michael Cera (Superbad) holding on to a “magical cactus.” The drug-filled comedy releases on July 12. (Source: Collider)
Brad Furman’s (The Lincoln Lawyer) upcoming crime drama rounds out the new posters. Starring Ben Affleck, Gemma Arterton (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters), and Justin Timberlake, the film revolves around a Princeton braniac (Timberlake) that confronts an off-shore online poker boss (Affleck). Eventually the fun must stop as the FBI gets involved. Runner, Runner releases September 27. (Source: Empire)
That does it for this week’s Poster Mania. Check back next week for more. Tomorrow’s post will be a photo round-up, so keep your eyes open!
Would love to know who the designers of the posters are ..
