Trailer Round-Up: Pacific Rim, The Counselor, Escape Plan, Prisoners, Thanks for Sharing, Hell Baby, Black Nativity, & The Conjuring
Starting out this week, I’ll be reporting on the new trailers for: Pacific Rim, The Counselor, Escape Plan, Prisoners, Thanks for Sharing, Hell Baby, Black Nativity, and The Conjuring. There are some exciting new movies on the horizon and this is the best of last week!
Last week, there were new pictures and a new clip for Pacific Rim, and now they’ve released a new trailer. Titled “At The Edge,” Guillermo del Toro’s robots vs. monsters action extraordinaire (check out all the action in the trailers) hits theaters July 12.
In one the two teasers from this week, you can get the first look at Ridley Scott’s next movie The Counselor. It’s exactly that – a teaser – so the plot is almost non-existent (or the extent of the plot for that matter). What you do get from the teaser is the cast (Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, and Cameron Diaz) and the overall vibe. The thriller has gone under my radar and it’ll release October 25 of this year.
After being initially pushed back to September, Escape Plan debuted its first trailer for the September 27 release. Starring physical juggernauts Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, it’s about a wrongfully accused prisoner that will try to escape a prison he designed. It has hints of Prison Break but with over-aged action stars. It’s directed by Mikael Håfström (The Rite)
Another trailer for Prisoners, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Incendies), landed online, too. Hugh Jackman is doing his best Liam Neeson impression in the thriller and Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) is taking on quite the role. It’ll be interesting to see how topsy-turvy the narrative is and we’ll find out September 20. It also stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a local investigator.
The sexual addiction (yes you read that right) drama/comedy Thanks for Sharing could be an interesting pic later this year. Releasing alongside Prisoners on September 20, Thanks for Sharing has a great cast – including (but not limited to) Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers), and Tim Robbins (Mystic River) – and is directed by Stuart Blumberg.
If not directed by Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (both of Comedy Central’s Reno 911!), I’d be skeptical of Hell Baby. The horromedy (horror/comedy) doesn’t have the most appealing trailer. However, like Reno 911! it’ll probably find an audience. Starring Lennon and Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), hopefully it’s as improvisational as I’m hoping. A release date will be released later on.
Besides The Counselor, the other teaser came from Kasi Lemmons’ (Talk to Me) Black Nativity. The musically-infused drama, starring Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, and Mary J. Blige, gives us more to work with when it comes to plot. The come-from-behind story about a lost teen spending the holidays in New York comes out (smartly) during the holiday season, starting November 27.
Finally, the horror film (no thanks!) The Conjuring released a disturbing trailer. It’s branded with “based on true events” and plays that up in the trailer. I said it was “disturbing” but you should take that with a grain of salt because I think all horror films look terrifying. Releasing soon (July 19), The Conjuring is directed by James Wan (Saw).
That does it for this week. For those unaware, we’re releasing daily themed posts on Trailers (Mondays), Posters (Tuesdays), Photos (Wednesday), News (Thursday), and Clips (Friday). Stay tuned and check back tomorrow!
