Seventh Son Panel [Comic-Con 2013]
Another movie coming out early next year is the fantasy film Seventh Son. With stars like Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, it definitely has potential. Again, I’m not as familiar with the source material (it’s based off a book as part of The Wardstone Chronicles series by Joseph Delaney), so this panel gave me an opportunity to get an inside look at the movie. Director Sergei Bodrov and stars Bridges, Ben Barnes, Alicia Vikander, and Kit Harington were all on board the fantasy panel that included new footage.
In the first panel of Saturday morning in Hall H, we got introduced to “The Dude” himself right away. He seems like a perfect role for the film because he has a bunch of funny one-liners but can still hold his own as an action star. He joked about his age and his fighting ability, but I definitely wouldn’t challenge the guy.
Seventh Son, for those that don’t know, is about a “Spook” named Master Gregory (played by Bridges) who trains an apprentice (played by Ben Barnes) to fight against the evils. In this case, the evil is Mother Malkin (played by Julianne Moore) among a couple things.
Although Moore was unfortunately absent on the panel, the exclusive Comic-Con footage did show plenty of her. The corset-wearing witch isn’t their only obstacle though. By the end of the video, we got a glimpse of the first big monster/creature, which I couldn’t do any justice trying to explain. The other big takeaway is a line in the footage about Gregory’s past love, insinuating he used to be in love with Malkin.
As it may sound (and is the case with lots of fantasy movies), CGI is a big part of the movie. Bodrov revealed that it was one of the biggest challenges in making the film, but promised the CGI to be second to the story and acting. Those things are more important.
When it got to the Q&A period, there was mention of the Seventh Son myth. For those that don’t know, the seventh son of a seventh son embodies special powers. As Bridges entered, he also mentioned the film was “choke full of myth,” so it’s worth keeping in mind.
In all, Seventh Son is another fantasy installment that looks to break the string of fantasy flops from 2013. The early 2014 release has the always badass Jeff Bridges who was definitely the highlight of the panel…well, him, and that monster thing. Check the movie out next January.
