Captain America: The Winter Soldier Panel [Comic-Con 2013]
As part of Marvel’s night panel, they spent a fair amount of time on next year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With no trailer out wide (I’m sure one is coming soon), Marvel introduced new footage in a panel consisting of Emily VanCamp, Georges St-Pierre, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans.
In the first part of the clip, we see Captain America kicking pretty much everyone’s butt in an elevator. We don’t get a lot about motive, but I’m just thinking it was more cool than important. The second part shows us Robert Redford’s character, Nick Fury’s fear-inducing ship, badass Falcon footage, and a look at The Winter Soldier. There were potentially spoilers about the villain, but it’s apparently not spoilery if you’ve read the comics.
Before the clip began, a short Q&A addressed a couple things of worth. According to Johannsson, The Winter Soldier will be a more “gritty” movie, which is the word-of-the-day for superhero movies. Based on the first half of the clip mentioned above, it didn’t seem all that gritty. However, by the end it did feel darker. It’ll be interesting to see how The Winter Soldier plays out as a villain (and the motives).
Comic-Con delivered when it mattered. Having only seen posters and photos of Captain America: The Winter Soldier before this weekend, Marvel gave fans exactly what they wanted/deserved. I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of Captain America: The First Avenger, but that doesn’t mean the sequel is going to fail. Marvel knows what they’re doing, so we shouldn’t worry too much!
