The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Panel [Comic-Con 2013]
Arguably the biggest movie draw at Comic-Con this year was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The sequel to The Hunger Games, and second of four movies in the franchise based on Suzanne Collins’ book series, releases later this year. It has, arguably, the best source material of the movies. Mix this with the Hunger Games hysteria, and Hall H was packed to the brim with people (and people were camping out all night). It’s disappointing (for me, not you guys not at Comic-Con) that the trailer released right after it showed here. However, there was plenty more to take in during the panel that included director Francis Lawrence and stars Willow Shields, Lenny Kravitz, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, and Jennifer Lawrence.
After introductions, we got the newest trailer (which you can see here) that I’ll quickly break down for you. It starts with Prim (Shields) telling Katniss (Lawrence) things have changed since the Games ended. When asked how, she answers simply with “hope.” The rest of the trailer isn’t exactly hopeful, but it does give us a glimpse inside The Quarter Quell, including some snazzy training, the selection process, and the first glimpse inside the actually games. Finally, it ends with Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) warning Katniss to “remember who the real enemy is.”
I am really excited for the film and this just added to the fire. The panel that followed was pretty decent, even if the questions weren’t exactly the best.
If you didn’t know this beforehand, star Jennifer Lawrence is lovable…and awkward. This made pretty much every answer she gave really funny. She brought us through a scene involving her accidentally getting snot in Josh Hutcherson’s mouth. She also explained how bad she is at both running and walking.
On a more serious note, her chemistry with Hutcherson was definitely on display. The two know each other well and are certainly funny – something even Jeffrey Wright pointed out.
For actual Catching Fire stuff, Lenny Kravitz gave us a little tease on Cinna’s final scene, eliciting some “awwwwws” from the crowd. Other than that, the majority of the stuff was basically in the trailer, and they didn’t elaborate on Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character which was my biggest curiosity.
In all, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire gave avid fans a new trailer (although it wasn’t very exclusive) and provided plenty of laughs with their subsequent panel. For fans that camped out since last night, I’m sure they appreciated the experience!
