News Round-Up: Casting News for the Affleck Brothers, Marion Cotillard; A New Scooby-Doo Movie; and More
It’s been a busy week in movie news, so I’ll get right to it. For casting, I’ll be talking about Ben Affleck in the Man of Steel sequel, Marion Cotillard in Macbeth, Casey Affleck in To Be Two, Natalie Dormer in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and Chadwick Boseman in a James Brown biopic. For release dates, Dallas Buyer’s Club adjusted their release date and Diana received a U.S. playdate. In new projects, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales officially unveiled its name and news broke of a Scooby-Doo animated film. Lastly, coming of the success of Lee Daniels’ The Butler, his next project will be a Janis Joplin biopic. Scroll to find more information!
If you haven’t heard by now, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Ben Affleck will join the exclusive Batman club. Following the end of The Dark Knight trilogy and the news of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel (reportedly titled Batman vs. Superman or vice versa), casting rumors swirled endlessly for weeks. They ended last Thursday with the news of Affleck taking over the cape and cowl. Rumors have his total appearances being around 13, so get used to it folks! Check out our reactions here, here, and here. (Source: First Showing)
In a tough act to follow, Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises) appears to have replaced Natalie Portman in Macbeth with Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class). Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) will be the director with a potential late 2014 release. (Source: THR)
Back to the Afflecks, Casey Affleck will reteam with David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) for To Be Two. Instead of a Western, this time they’ll be doing a sci-fi adaptation of a short story (titled “Into the Silent Land: Travels in Neuropsychology” by Paul Broks). More info will be available soon. Natalie Dormer (HBO’s Game of Thrones) is the latest to join The Hunger Games franchise. She’ll be acting in Mockingjay (Parts 1 & 2) as Cressida. The two movies, both directed by Catching Fire’s Francis Lawrence, will release November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015. (Source: MSN Movies)
Hollywood newcomer Chadwick Boseman (42) is filling the long-awaited James Brown role in the upcoming biopic. Tate Taylor (The Help) is tapped as the director with other info still being determined. Fans of Brown have been waiting for this movie for awhile, and Boseman seems to be a great fit – if we’re going off his limited filmography. (Source: Variety)
Both Dallas Buyer’s Club and Diana will be releasing on November 1st in the U.S. Dallas Buyer’s Club (directed by Jean-Marc Vallee and starring Matthew McConaughey) is being moved up (and will play at the Toronto International Film Festival), whereas Diana (directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and starring Naomi Watts) finally received a U.S. date. Although a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie isn’t really “news,” the new title is. The fifth installment will officially be called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Johnny Depp will again play Jack Sparrow, but Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg will takeover the directing duties. (Source: Collider)
I’ve also got exciting news about an animated Scooby-Doo movie in the works. It’s certainly not a huge surprise, but now we have confirmation. Warner Brothers will be distributing the movie with other details still in the works. We’ll have more when it comes out. (Source: Variety)
To end things, I have more on another upcoming biopic. After Lee Daniels’ The Butler, he has signed on to direct a Janis Joplin film. Amy Adams (Man of Steel) will apparently play Joplin. Again, not a whole lot is known yet. (Source: Huffington Post)
Thanks for tuning in this week! You can expect another installment next week (and new clips tomorrow).
