News Round-Up: Jennifer Lawrence & Hugh Jackman Casting; ‘Warcraft’ & ‘Ted 2’ Release Dates; and More
Welcome to another day of this week’s new releases! For casting, I’ll be talking about two A-listers – Jennifer Lawrence in East of Eden and Hugh Jackman in Chappie – and a popular singer – Taylor Swift in The Giver – who all lined up new projects. For the second week in a row, the post will be release date-heavy with the latest on Warcraft, Ted 2, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, and Foxcatcher (which is moving back).
Jennifer Lawrence will partner up with Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) for his adaptation of East of Eden. Ross is known to take his time between films (thus why he didn’t return for Catching Fire), but it looks like this movie should be coming out in the near future (although an official date isn’t known). It’s based on John Steinbeck’s novel of the same name and will be the second adaptation to date. No other cast members are known at this time. (Source: Deadline)
Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine) is the latest to join Neil Blomkamp’s Chappie which also stars Sharlto Copley (Elysium). He’ll be the main antagonist in the sci-fi film about a robot (go figure) that is taken over by gangsters for their illegal uses. Again, the film will shoot in South Africa with a March 27, 2015 slated release date. (Source: EW)
Taylor Swift will also star in a film shooting in South Africa. She joins Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges in an adaptation of a 1993 children’s novel. The movie, titled The Giver, will be directed by Phil Noyce. Swift will apparently play the Chief Elder character. We’ll update you with a release date when it’s known. (Source: USA Today)
Duncan Jones’ (Source Code) Warcraft has a firm release date now. Based on the popular computer game, Warcraft has been on the horizon for a long, long time. It’ll be the latest 2015 tentpole film when it comes out December 18, 2015. Casting announcements are still to come. (Source: Cinema Blend)
Ted 2 was already set for a 2015 release but now have the exact day. Seth MacFarlane’s sequel comes out June 26, 2015. It’s very close the original movie’s date…except three years later. Mark Wahlberg will star in the movie. (Source: L.A. Times)
Hot Tub Time Machine 2, another comedy in line for a sequel, also got a release…month. Adam Scott (NBC’s Parks and Recreation) will replace John Cusack with Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry among the ones coming back. Director Steve Pink also returns and the movie will release in March of 2014. (Source: Collider)
Foxcatcher, a movie originally poised to debut during this year’s awards season push, moved back to 2014, effectively ending its chances this year. Bennett Miller’s (Moneyball) film stars Steve Carell (NBC’s The Office) and Channing Tatum (Magic Mike). Even though we know it won’t release November 8, we still don’t know an official 2014 date.
